Members newbuilder
Very cool you decided to do the headstock. I think it is going to look much better that way. Yeah, it was a better idea to do the headstock, looks like it was meant to be this way now. Thanks.
Members jshaffer20
That looks NICE!!! Now you have me thinking about doing my 520 LOL. How does the neck feel after doing that? I lightly sanded mine to put a matte finish on the thick poly and it feels MUCH nicer that way. Is the feel comparable to that? Is it pretty durable? Members mfergel
Just make sure to keep record of the serial number. Even if you don't plan to get rid of it. Maybe even stamp it, just in case of theft.

I like it better...this one was sanded down when I got it and it felt nice...this feels more like the texture of a faded LP studio...I love it! ___________________________________ Some pics to tide over till better can be taken. Members jshaffer20
I think I am gonna do this to mine. That looks fantastic! My 520 is getting pretty beat up and I would like to do the whole thing but im not sure if I want to tackle that yet. It looks fairly simple to do and I am good with a sander. Is there any sanding needed between coats?

Is there any sanding needed between coats? THis one had a couple of dings through the finish in the back already and that's why I said "what the hell?" I did some sanding with 320 wet...I leave a piece soaking through the whole project in a bowl of water and keep knocking the grain back down and feeling the guitar for rough spots. You might consider a grain filler if you like it real smooth...I like that it feels like wood:idk: Thanks alot man and post a thread when you start your project! I will post some better pics soon. Members Mind Riot
Lovely piece of work, newbuilder. That is some handsome mahogany considering it was a solid finish before. Sometimes you can get some ugly cuts all slapped together when you remove finish, but that thing looks like a showpiece now. Personally, I'd leave it as it is, the burst on top with the natural back and sides is very classy.
Members chqtarzan
classy is the word, didn't expect the mahogany being that good!good job!
Members w00dsy
this thread could be a bad thing, or a good thing. I've been thinking about taking the paint of the back of my Edwards(see avatar) and leaving the top black, much like what Great Danes guitar will look like after Meandi has finished waving his magic wand over it. This has given me some more motivation. I'm just not sure how it'd look with the binding on the back.

This one was an opaque finish and I think that is why the pieces were matched so well...I am leaving the burst on the top...I love it! Thank you very much! Members w00dsy
Thank you...and I agree it could be a bad thing, but I have a tendency to do things like this and hope that they come out well:idk: i actually meant it could be a bad thing for my guitar, your work is excellent, mine is unknown at the moment
Members mfergel
Yeah, I like the way that came out. I'll be interested to see what you do if/when you decide to refinish the top.

Members newbuilder
i actually meant it could be a bad thing for my guitar, your work is excellent, mine is unknown at the moment All projects have a possibility of going south, that is part of the excitement, it could end in tragedy any second...or be an awsome project. Thank you very much for the compliment, I have my share of lemons out there as well.
Members ZombieCat
Have you thought about bleaching out the sides of the maple cap? While the guitar looks great now, I think it would look awesome to have the exposed sides of the cap match the binding on the neck and headstock. I am assuming at this point since it is stained, you would have to bleach it to lighten the color. There could be other ways I am not aware of. Thanks man, I think I am done with this one...with the exception of winding new pups for her and some locking tuners and perhaps some Bournes low friction pots. It was fun and if I were going to do anything further it will be a while and probably when I wind the new pickups.
