NGD and Unexpected Soon To Be HNAD

I was getting into some electric 12-string guitar sounds, while listening to tunes at work on Wednesday, and after decades of blowing them off, I decided to give 12 strings a try. So, I stopped off at my favorite local guitar shop (Cream City Music), to try out a few on Wednesday night. The 330/12 they had was pretty cool, but waaaaay out of my price range at $1900. But, they also had a couple of new Danelectro DC-12s. I gave a red one a try, and liked the feel of the neck, and the sound of it enough, to take the plunge and buy it. I didn't want to make too much of a dent in my finances, so I put it on layaway.

I hadn't planned on bringing it home until the 15th of this month (payday for me), but yesterday, during a lunchtime meal that was held at work for those of us who contributed to The United Way, I received some rather unexpected prize money for winning a charity/United Way, blackjack tournament a couple of months ago. This prize money gave me enough of a cash cushion, that my finances wouldn't be unduly crimped until payday on the 15th, if I paid the guitar off. So, last night I paid off my Danelectro DC-12, and brought it home (photo is not of mine - my camera bit the dust). I'm on vacation, and I hope to spend some time today getting to know the 12 string, and hopefully recrding some sound clips with the Mustang II amp. I got a great deal on the guitar too. Normally they go for $450 to $500. My cost was $300.

Now where was I? - Oh yeah! An unexpected NAD in a week or so! I would post this over in the Amps forum, but it's not a Splawn (which I DON'T like), or an Engl (which I DO like), so I doubt it would get their seal of approval. So, I'll post it here instead.

As I was walking in the door of Cream City Music, I saw their amp tech taking what looked like an older Fender combo amp out to the sales floor. Out of curiosity, I followed him to where he put it down. It turned out to be this (the photo is not of the amp in question)!

It's a Fender Champ 25 SE. Fender made these in the US from 1992-1994. They are 25 watt amps, and are hybrids ala the Music Man, and Marshall Artist amps. It has a solid state pre-amp, two 6V6 power tubes, and (I'm not 100% sure, but I thought I might have seen one when I took a quick look in the back) a 12AX7 pre-amp, or phase inverter tube. It also has a 12" Fender labled speaker.

I hadn't seen one of those in a very long time! The asking price was $175. I was only semi-interested in it, but out of curtiosity, decided to try it out. It's a channel switching amp, so I tried the clean channel first - NICE!! It has good, warm Fendery cleans, without sounding glassy, like some Fender amps sound to me. The distortion channel also sounded pretty good. With the voicing control, I was able to get tones that were very akin to the Rivera era Princeton Reverb II I had 20 years ago, THAT I SHOULD HAVE HELD ON TO! It wasn't a mega gain, modern metal distortion, but more akin to what a Supersonic sounds like. If it's anything like my old Princeton Reverb II, all you need to do, run the amp's distortion channel, run a clean boost into the amp, and you'll be in death tone territory!

The amp's a little grungy and ratty looking (no tears in the tolex, but it's dusty inside, and is missing the knobs that go on the master volume, and reverb pots). The amp tech told me that he didn't have much invested in it service-wise, and that it basically sat in back for a few years, occasionally being used as a test hack for guitars. He told me if I was interested in it, I could have it for $125. SOLD!! At one time, I had a long running eBay search going on for Princeton Reverb IIs, since I realized I was an idiot for selling mine years ago. But, they're going for stupid money on eBay. I think this will more than do the job of replacing my old Princeton Reverb II.

To keep my finances happy (hey, I just bought a guitar!), I put it on layway. I should be able to pick it up on the 15th or 16th of this month.

What a busy guitar oriented night last night!
