I'm looking for a Semi Hollow Body 335 clone...and this looks like a nice guitar for the money. Has anyone played one or own one?

I've got an older AS-820.

It's a pretty decent guitar. I swapped out the stock pickups, pots, caps, and switch. The stockers weren't terrible, but the pickups were too hot for the guitar, IMO.

The guitar plays good and sounds good though.

Nice. I didn't know you had one of those. You never mention it.

I like those better than the new ones. The amputated horns look goofy to me. (yes, I know it's shallow but it's honest)

I've had it for about 6 or 7 years. Wife bought it for me for Christmas.

I don't gig it very often because, well, I'm just not a semi kind of guy most of the time.

I use it for recordings fairly often though.

I had wanted a semi for a while and when that one came up at Rondo, I sent a link to the wife, just telling her that I wouldn't mind having it. That was around August. I sort of let it go after that and forgot about.

Christmas rolled around, and that was one of my gifts. :thu:

It looks like for the same coin I could get a Hagstrom Viking...hmmm.

Based on looks alone and if they are similar in price, I'd go with the Hag. I have a Deluxe F that plays incredibly well but I had one of the 600 series and that sucked.

That Agile looks nice and the fact that it's 7.5 pounds is great. Gibson ES 335's are up in the 8.5+ range these days.

I've seen Agiles reviewed in two unlikely sources recently (Vintage Guitar and...I can't remember the other pub). They continue to amaze reviewers although they always conclude with something like "great for a first guitar, a backup, or set up for slide..." Reviewers can't bring themselves to saying "hey, this makes a great guitar for anyone who doesn't care about exotic rainforest timbers or the name on the headstock..."

I find a lot of es335s sound like cardboard when played unplugged, including some Gibsons. That said I bought my as820 from Rondo bc it played and sounded great. Nothing like an Epi dot. Maybe it's less "ES335" like then? Dunno, but it's a great guitar for the money. My Ibanez Artcore is decent too actually, but I prefer my Agile. YMMV

Try an ES339 if you can find one. Really loud and zingy unplugged and the plugged sound is downright gnarly.

My ES335 is quite lively acoustically, but I know what you are saying. They can be dark and slightly muted even when amplified. That's not necessarily a bad thing--depending on you style--but there is a lot of variation from one to the next. I wouldn't buy an ES339 sight unseen unless I had to.
