Members fu2jobu
I once found a set of the Audio Technica ATH-M40 for under $50. Not the worlds greatest headphones but worked well for the price IMO. A few years later I went with the el cheapo ATH-M20 and regretted it. Members Invader.CC
Koss Portapro's are about the best in that range you can find them as cheap as $35 new on Amazon..I use them mostly for quiet practice ..But they work fine for recording also..http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0oGdWLzYONMMJsAeTlXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTE1dTg2MWlhBHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDMQRjb2xvA3NrMQR2dGlkA1ZJUDAyNV8xNjI-/SIG=12umtefok/EXP=1290056307/**http%3a//www.koss.com/koss/kossweb.nsf/p%3fopenform%26pc%255Ept%255EPORTAPRO

Members Deadbeat Son
Yamaha RH5MA headphones get excellent reviews for studio monitoring and are available for $40-50. I have a pair that I've had for years. They're comfy, and they sound great.
Members cratz2
Sennheisser makes a set that are about $40... Maybe the HD240s or something like that... They aren't as comfortable as my AKGs, but they sound just fine if you want a closed presentation.

Members ashasha
I went through all of this about 7 years ago and finally just bought some big boy headphones and paid through the nose (IMO anyway). But I have heard great things about Grado's (can't even remember the model number but I think that it has an 80 in it). People swear by these things and they aren't much more than your budget. I also came across a nice set of Sennheiser HD205's. I like them so much that I ordered 15 sets for work. I don't remember the price, but they were right around your budget and they hung fairly well with my personal cans at home. They're a bit snug, but they are well made and sound like they cost a hell of a lot more than we paid for them.

Members docjeffrey
I have several sets of headphones. Grados are my favorites, but I travel with a pair of these sensibly priced Sennheisers. They are reasonably good at blocking out noise on airplanes too. Great sounding considering the price and portability. Around $50.
Members etawful
It may sound crazy, but I REALLY like my JVC HA-RX700 Excellent price, and excellent quality (do some Googling for reviews on them). The HA-RX 900 are even better. Amazon carries them both.

Members WRGKMC
You dont get into decent headphones until you're over the $100 pro range. I'd save my money and get something better. Anything less isnt going to get you want you want. With that said, Headphone are for tracking only. You want isonlation, closed back, over the ear type so they dont leak into a mic when singing. Its good is they have a good flat frequency responce but none do. You mainly want to have a good strong signal without distortion. For mixing music, you need nearfield monitors. You cant mix and get a good soundscape with even the highest quality headphones. I used them for 15 years when I had small kids and lived in an apartment, and if I did get a good mix it was more luck than anything else. Headphones throw your depth perception off and make mix sound two dimensional. The only way to achieve a 3D soundscape is with monitors and a good sounding room. Members fu2jobu
I like the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro's. Sweet, where did you find them for $50 or less? I wouldn't mind having a second pair as backup for that price.

I've had a pair for about 4 or 5 years and are what I always take on a trip. I just cram them in the corner of the suitcase and they still work 100% perfectly. I prefer an open back phone like my AKGs, but the HD201s are good enough that I haven't actively sought out an open back replacement.

Members BeanoBoy
I've been using a Sennheiser HD570 FOREVER. Don't remember what it cost. Probably more than $50. No complaints. I use 'em when I'm recording vocals. Usually play instruments while listening to my monitors.
