Nitro friendly stands, do they exist???

My understanding is that the Hercules stands are nitro friendly.

http://www.music123.com/search/search.jsp?question=hercules+stand

I've recently started using one myself so fingers crossed here.

I used to love my Quik Lok stands but if you leave a nitro in there too long, they will eventually start to melt them down. Between me and my son we've had some 3 Gibbies get some degree of damage or another from Quik Lok stands.

My most recent heartbreak was getting a couple blemishes on the upper horn of a Fender EJ Strat from a friggin strap. It was a Levis leather strap, but a relatively inexpensive one. There is some sort of synthetic material between the outer leather skins, and the little bit of this gooey black crap in between the leather outer layers by the button hole put two black smudges deep into the finish of my blonde EJ. Could not buff or even scrape it off. It will need some touch up paint now to cover the blem.

I owe a big FU to Levis now as well as Quik Lok. But I'm more pissed at Levi since their product was more of a false advertisement than Quik Lok. QL didn't make any assertions about nitro safe, but Levi didn't disclose that their leather strap was part toxic road tar.

I use those warick rockstands and havent had a problem

Come to think of it, I haven't had any mishaps with my warwick rockstand either. And I've often left a Gibby in there for prolonged period. I've checked them from time to time with panic in my heart after realizing how long I've left a nitro in there, but so far, so good.

... couldn't you just line any normal stand with some sort of silk or cotton? nothing dyed of course, just plain fabric, like the strips you'd buy to apply shellac

From my experience, any temporary solution like that is another potential problem waiting to happen. A towel can fall off or even worse be the tail that gets caught on something and brings the guitar crashing off the stand. Rather than a jeri-rig solution on this one, rather get the real deal if it's out there.

i have always thought that a company should sell slip covers for the foam part of stands to make them nitro safe. just little covers that go over them so there will never be this problem again because i always see people just put a rag over the foam and it works but i bet they would like it to look a bit better knowing how guitarist think.set the price point low and make them so there are a lot of different models for different stands. just a thought, then this question would never arise and problem would be solved.

ah i thought something looked wrong with how i spelt that...

I was referring to those single guitar stands, not the ones pictured above

Ones like:

They have a matte black type foam which seems to be nitro safe, unlike that shiny, smooth stuff.

This is the stand I have, and every piece has been wrapped in sections of cotton towel, with another towel on the bottom. Looks funky, but doesn't hurt.

You can use any stand as long as you don't keep it on the stand for a long time. I use a Hercules for my R9 when playing and it works fine.

The other option is just cover the parts it touches with cotton cloth. Problem solved.

Stick clear or rubber hose stands. Worthless POS cheap crap from music store sales. YUK.

Three years on my Herculese stands haven't left a mark in new nitro, vintage nitro or self applied (Behlins) nitro.

Ooh I love a well considered testimonial. Looks like I'll be going with the Hercules then. Thx:cool:

Sage advice from the rest of you as well. Much appreciated.:thu:

Are you referring to the Levy's M4, the simple leather strap for about 20 bucks? I'm considering one for my new LP but might go with something else if the glue is toxic.

I can take a look at it when I get home to see if there's a model number on it, but it was a white leather strap and I do recall that it was definitely in that price range, so I'd be careful with any inexpensive leather strap from Levis. I only went with them because I was looking for a white strap for some of my white guitars. But if you're looking for leather and can use black or brown, then I recommend the Perris suede straps. Only problem with them is it's a good idea to use a strap lock with him since the button holes are a little bit loose compared to some.

I don't think these can be beat for fifteen bucks

plus they have better grip on you shoulder which takes care of all but the worst neck droop (heavy) guitars.

These are a nice strap lock if you want to be able to lock a strap with no alteration.

and that's for a pair.

Can you elaborate? Love to hear your experiences.

I've seen virtually every brand cause problems here and there, even the supposedly nitro-safe Hercules. Most of the time they're ok, but it's really a crapshoot. Depending on the nitro itself, time, and seemingly chance, they can burn just as badly as any other. At the store I work for, I cover the contact points of all stands and hangers to be used for nitro instruments with a few layers of cloth.

Yes. I have some black velveteen that is 100% cotton. Looks like the same thing my cases are lined with. It was in my dear departed mom's sewing stuff from a vampire costume she made for me when I was about 9 years old (pack rat syndrome is hereditary). I cut strips of this, sewed some tubes up and slipped them over the existing foam {censored} on the stands. Then I used some black thread to make sure they stay put. I'd post pics but they just won't show up.
