Apple Reveals the iPad 2

Recommended Posts

March 25th for Mexico

I am not "so sure" I'll jump immediately into the new one, given I already have the 64GB, WiFi + 3G model, but will surely do sooner than later :) I mean, twice the speed and faster graphics, what's not to like?

Beast,

Gus

I watched some of the presentation today and honestly, I`m still scratching my head over this thing... what exactly is the point of it? A friend of mine has one and he literally walks around with it all day. He showed me some apps one day, I think he was disappointed when I was bored with it. Honestly, I have not seen one app that makes me want to throw down $500 to get one. I would rather plop down $1000 and get a macbook. I know I`m in the minority over this but it just seems like the Casio watch we used to drool over as kids... I`m sure you remember... it had a light, it was waterproof and it had a calculator on it! Thats what the iPad reminds me of.:bor:

It's because he couldn't demo Garage Band to you.
;)
Or maybe he's just not into music apps and so had nothing to show that would be of interest to a musician.
;)

That could be. I think the issue for me is size. I like to have some real estate space when I`m working on anything digital. I`m just not a fan of small screens, even on my cell phone. I tried surfing the web once... it was the most unpleasant experience.

The other thing I`ll add to this whole digital device trend we seem to be in... it seems that manufacturers are creating more devices for the simple production and profit of selling them.

Do we need yet another digital device? Of course, most consumers will validate the $$$ they spend on these toys but seriously, we did fine w/o them.

To me, the iPad is a really large phone with some other computer apps on it. What exactly are they adding to ones life to make them "must have devices"?

Is the day coming when we have a cell phone that unfolds into a mini computer? I might be interested in that if it can fit in my pocket and unfold into something much larger.

Indeed, there is a good chance I will be taking a long vacation again this summer (and yes probably returning to my job afterwards LOL). I brought my Macbook Pro to the park to use the free WiFi in the city that I visited, but it's quite a bit heavier than the iPad and does not have a battery life even close to the iPad's. This time around I could see myself being musically productive in that park (after checking email and such) using the likes of Garageband/Nanostudio/Beatmaker2 (or Symphony Pro for writing with notation) for sketching out songs/pieces and a selection of surprisingly powerful synth apps (Jasuto Pro, iMS-20, etc.) for messing around with sounds. And being able to immediately videocam/photograph/audio sample unexpected things going on at the park is a nice bonus.

My sense of the iPad is that it's the kind of thing where you look at it and go "nah, not interested." But then if you end up with one, you kick yourself for not having gotten it sooner.

Remember when it first came out? People were thinking it was a crazy idea, sort of "Jobs' folly." Didn't quite turn out that way, did it...

People have been clamoring for multi-touch monitors to use as control surfaces for awhile now. Unlike physical controllers, the form factor is infinitely malleable, albeit within the confines of a two dimensional screen space. Finally, you can move knobs and faders directly on the screen, without having to rely on a control surface or a mouse!

And the iPad is a great solution--cheap, by multi-touch standards. Plus, it's bigger than an iPhone, more portable than a desktop multi-touch monitor, and less bulky than any of the few laptop models with a multi-touch monitor. Its tablet form factor isn't just handy as a controller, its great for reading in most of the places one would normally take a book or magazine, and it seems like it would make a pretty good portable TV set, game unit, and go anywhere GPS receiver too.

I don't have one yet, but I can definitely see its value in the aforementioned areas over anything I now own. It's not an essential device for me, but I can nevertheless see how it would make my life easier in a number of ways. Once I've take care of more critical expenses, the iPad will be near the top of my elective purchases.

Best,

Geoff

Oh, and if you're an Omnisphere fan, you'll want to check out its new iPad controller interface. Spectrasonics has created a new way to interact with Omnisphere, and its free at the App Store.

Things get especially interesting just after the 5:00 minute mark of the video below:

Thats hilarious Craig. Thanks for the cheap laugh. Now, do we actually email this guy?

Actually I came back to this thread after watching this Apple video concerning the iPad. Starting July 5, I`ll be returning to school to get my Masters and from there, maybe even a Doctorate. If I can get all the books I need on an iPad, than its completely worth it. Just watching these kids learn is also inspiring.
