Members InnerVision
Both My strat and Tele have a Satin Poly finish on the neck..It's nice and all, but.... When I Play a guitar with a Painted Neck/Glossy finish, I absolutely love the way it feels.. So...Stupid question may be stupid, but here it goes: Would A glossy finish on a strat/tele neck feel the same as a painted neck with a gloss finish? I mean..It's essentially the same thing right? Just minus the paint underneath? What do you guys prefer?
Members Doctor Morbius
I prefer a satin neck. Glossy/painted necks are more difficult for me to play.
Members bsman
I prefer a satin finish, and in answer to your question: It depends. A painted neck on a nitro-finished guitar is wayyy different than a painted neck on a poly-finished guitar. The latter feels pretty identical to a "normal" gloss-finished neck whereas the former is "stickier" to the hand -- a really different feeling. Yeah..I know what you mean...When I had my SG, my hands use to stick to the neck...but playing my prs feels like butter:love: (which I believe is poly)
Members warriorpoet
I go back and forth. Satin on just about everything finished except PRS necks- LOVE the PRS gloss. Unfinished or oiled is the best (my thinline and Taylor are both this way)
Members cratz2
Not a deal breaker, but I definitely prefer a glossy neck to a satin finished neck. I like my two tung oil finished necks more than most of the glossy necks I've played so maybe that's the ticket. But when I get a guitar that has a truly satin feel, I just use a bit of rubbing for polishing compound on the back of it, then a bit of wax. I just feel that my bending and vibrato are better with a neck that gives some resistance.
Members ten56gibby
Don't dig gloss at all. My hand catches on the grimified surface that it becomes well into a long set. Satin or tung oil ftw.
Members clay sails
I always think that I prefer satin, but my favorite, fastest neck is a PRS SE with a shiny finish of some sort on it (prolly poly?). *shrug*

I'll take all those glossy American Standard and Robert Cray necks next time I'm over if you can't stand the gloss!

I still do prefer the finish on Fender satin necks, but no one can touch the PRS wide-fat!
