Fender 72 Telecaster Deluxe

Have been offered one of these in a trade, and money wise it looks like a pretty good deal... But I've always been a Gibson/Gibson-style kinda guy so I don't know much about Fenders - and nothing about this particolar model...

What do you guys think about it?

I know most people use to play different music styles with it, but could it do hard rock (the usual Ac/Dc, Guns N Roses, etc. influenced kinda stuff) well in your opinion?

I'm talkin' about the Mexican reissues BTW...

... Thanks! :thu:

With the right amp, I'd say they could do hard rock without a problem. The Wide-Range reissue pickups sound a lot like PAFs, but I found the guitar still has plenty of that snappy Fender attack on notes. It's not a bright guitar necessarily, but it's still a 25.5" scale maple/alder bolt-on; though it doesn't sound wholly like a Telecaster (or like an original Deluxe), it's still unmistakably Fender.

What's more, the neck pickup is kind of an odd duck. It's pretty loud and bassy with the stock electronics, and a lot of people choose to swap pots for brighter tone. I had good luck with simply adjusting the pickup height, and ended up with this cool, jazzy, muted high-end sound that still had lots of Fender attack. I can't imagine everybody would want the same thing, though.

Thanks for the replies guys! :thu:

Sounds like I could like it... I've always been a "hot rodded PAF" guy myself, but lately I've discovered the "middle-of-the-road" kind of pickups (Filtertrons, Dynasonics, P90s, etc.), and I'm lovin' them!

Maybe humbuckers on a Fender-style guitar can get me in that kind of ballpark - PAF fullness with that added "rawness" and top-end sparkle...

EVH changed the world with a humbucker that was completely NOT hot. There are very few 'hot' humbuckers that I feel sound good.

In my personal opinion, original Fender Wide Range humbuckers are some of the best sounding humbuckers EVER. Seth Lover designed the original Fender Wide Range humbucker, for what that's worth. The new 'wide range humbuckers' are not at all the same as those originals. The originals had CuNiFe (copper, nickel, iron) threaded pole pieces. Having magnets as pole pieces rather than using a bar magnet laying at the base of the poles has a much more clear sound in a very good way. I feel that a more clear pickup fed into an amp set for stun sounds much better and responds better to playing technique that uber-hot distort-o pickups.

OTOH, if you're really into AC/DC, GnR and their ilk, there might not be a compelling reason for you to get a Tele (or any Fender) at all. Right tool for the job and all that.

It sounds like this guitar would be good if you wanted to try something a little different, but still stay near your comfort zone. But in terms of just whaling out the classic hard rock (nothin wrong with that), I doubt this will ever sound as good as a Les Paul or an SG.

Just some food for thought...
