Members illinismitty
My son got a remote controlled car from Grandma. Guess what? The remote required a 9 volt battery and we did not have any in the battery drawer. I went upstairs and took out the battery from the ESP Viper, and my little boy was happy. You see, EMGs serve a purpose:thu:
Members w00dsy
but now EMG have caused your guitar to become useless.

Members codek
do EMG's suck that much these days? All I hear is EMG bashing
Members bish0p34
I love my EMGs. They don't suck. They're great at what they do, and the 18v mod makes them better.

One of the best heavy tones I've ever heard...and I am such a passive pickup fan but EMGs (especially with 18v) and Seymour Duncan Blackouts sound amazing for high gain stuff. I've even heard a beautiful array of clean music using the EMG 60.
Members billybilly
Tone is subjective, I can't stand them, but you get that. I have tried the s, sa, 60, 60A, 85, 81 and 89. All rubbish. Glad the battery helped out though.
Members chimi
It's funny how things change. When i got my first decent guitar years ago everyone on this forum told me to put emgs in it. To tell you the truth i'm not even sure why everyone is bashing them these days. Did they put out a higher priced purple pickup that is much worse than the originals?
Members cratz2
I'm not an EMG hater at all... I think they are very capable pickups that just don't quite measure up to the best pickups out there in terms of pure tone... Of course, they tend to be more versatile than most pickups once you are in a band setting, playing on different stages, dealing with noise issues. They also tend to not muddy up as quickly as, say, standard LP wiring when turning the volume down. I had an LTD EC1000 in the satin Vintage Black and I couldn't seem to dial in a bad tone if I wanted to. But I'll still take Seth Lovers, 57 Classics, BB1s and 2s over EMGs. I think a lot of the hate stems from many shredders playing them and shredders seem to garner a lot of hate. I remember back in the day when it was mostly single coil guys that I saw with EMGs, trying to avoid the noise pitfalls of most traditional single coils at stage volumes. They serve a very specific purpose and they sound fine to my ears... until directly compared to great pickups. Different tools for different roles. I love 'em, but I wouldn't want them in all of my guitars.

I use them in some of my guitars, but I also use Seymour's and DiMarzio's in my others. My metal guitars definitely have them though.
