Members Senor Cleavage
Success. They get famous with their bitchin riff/solo/song/image (any or all of those), the fans love it and management wants to keep it going by repeating the formula. Guitarist is usually screwed if he/she tries to expand his/her horizons; fans revolt because it doesn't sound like the earlier stuff, label and management drop them and they wind up workin' at a gas station. This doesn't apply just to great guitarists.

Members Angry Tele
Not a weakness but it pisses me off when Vince Gill sings a slow ballad instead of shredding teh Tele. And Link Wray sucked with wah-wah

He stated this to Bono on their "Rattle and Hum" movie when they were rehearsing "When love comes to town". Members C-4
Weakness is not just for the great, or famous players. It is just being human. There are things that come to each of us that are just part of how we approach playing. Licks and chording that we naturally move to as part of who we each are individually. These things help to define our style, our way of playing, and what we hear. It's like our handwriting. Each time we sign something, it is slightly different, yet still shows that we signed it personally. Some may interpret these things as a weakness. I see it as our personal signature in how each of us absorb, learn, and reiterate musically what we have had in experiences throught our lives as growing guitar players. Bono replied, "Oh, the Edge can do that bit" I always suspected that he was letting on a bit about that. With the kind of arpeggios he sometimes play he must know his fair share of chord theory. AS for the OP: Anyone who develops a particular style or musical voice will by definition exclude other aspects of musical expression. Nobody does it all, or do it equally well
Members Yer Blues
BB King knows a lot about theory. He's older now, so his playing isn't what it once was. He definitely knows chords though as he use to throw chord stabs in all the time back in the day. I believe his comment on reading music was that he can do it, but it takes him some time... i.e. he can't sight read.

Members scuzzo
man... BB can play could play.. if at this stage in life he is slowing down.. its understandable.. there are few sounds have more depth then this in the blues kinda genra... there is a honesty there that kinda evades description.. it pointless to load up platitudes.. it is what it is.. Back on topic...prob the thing that cripples great guitarist is the whole Ego thing.. Iggy Pop's quote "the guitarist is a tolerated prick"being a guitarist i tend to agree.. Of course bono actually calls the edge "the edge." "Hey, The Edge, would you pass the salt?" Douches. Also, why "The Edge?" Dude's as edgy as a frat boy thinking he's being edgy by wearing a pink lacoste shirt.
