Trip to Boston

Posted this in Effects, but I figure it can't hurt to ask you people too :thu:

Me and some buddies are talking about going to Boston this winter. For a week, or so, in February or March.

So:

- what is there to do in and around Boston?

- how much will we have to pay for lodging? Anyone know of decent places?

- good places to eat?

- can we combine this with a 2-days trip to New York, f.ex?

We want to go to a concert or two, and maybe see the Bruins and/or the Celtics.

Otherwise we like to eat lots of different foods, talk to people, have fun, maybe drink a little. Not so big on the whole "going to museums"-deal, but I suppose we could go to one of those too.

Looks like we'll be using Icelandair.

Any thoughts on going to Boston?

Teh greetingz from Norway! :D:thu:

Its definitely possible to get to new york during the one week trip. I used to take the Fung Wah or Lucky Star bus from south station back in college. Its not completely reliable or safe, but its $15 each way.

As for bars and music, Ned Divine's in Faneuil hall is a great bar on Fridays and Saturdays for decent live music. If you are going to be in the Fenway area then Lansdowne Pub is smaller but similar.

And for a great guitar store check out Mr. Music on Harvard Ave in Allston. Lots of unique/vintage stuff.

I'm not sure if February or March is the best time to visit Boston, but if you're from Norway I suppose you won't mind the cold. I actually live in New York, but my fiancee's in Boston so I'm up there quite often. I've never had a problem with the Fung Wah or Lucky Star buses. Keep your expectations low, but they're cheap and run every hour. The trip takes about 4 hours if there's no traffic.

If you're into indie music, check out the Middle East or TT the Bear.

You'll freeze yer nuts off.

Wait a second. Your from Norway? Better pack a swim suite. The Nantucket beaches are nice in February, as the icebergs should be cracking apart by then.

The Fung Wah bus is not only cheap, but exciting! They make the news periodically here in the Hub. From Wikipedia:

"The Fung Wah bus has been involved in several safety-related incidents. In 2005, the company was given a federal safety rating of 73 out of 100, 100 being the worst, and 75 or above considered at risk of being unsafe and subject to crashes.[2] Ian Grossman of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration reported that Fung Wah drivers rated in the worst 2 percent of drivers nationwide based on regulatory violations, and nine out of 71 Fung Wah drivers were suspended after inspection between 2004 and 2006.[3]

* August 16, 2005: A New York-bound bus caught fire on Interstate 91 near Meriden, Connecticut. Though the passengers later criticized the driver for being unhelpful and untrained in evacuating the bus, all passengers were eventually evacuated and no injuries were reported.[6]

* September 6, 2006: A bus rolled over in Auburn, Massachusetts and caused minor injuries to 34 passengers.[7] Excessive speed was cited as a factor and the bus company was fined.[8]

* January 3, 2007: In Framingham, Massachusetts, a New York-bound bus lost its back two wheels. No injuries were reported.[9]

* February 14, 2007: The driver of a New York-bound bus lost control in a winter storm and hit a guardrail on the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) in Allston, Massachusetts. No injuries were reported.[10]

* March 23, 2007: A New York-bound bus got stuck on a concrete barrier in front of a tollbooth on the Massachusetts Turnpike at Route 128 in Weston, Massachusetts, when the bus drove up on a cement lane divider. The driver had entered an automobile-only lane and tried to change lanes. No one was injured in the incident, but the bus was taken out of service and passengers boarded another Fung Wah bus that arrived later."

Hmm. So obviously it's gonna be frickin cold.. Would it help to make the trip towards the end of March/beginning of April, or will we still freeze to death?
:p

It's a mixed bag around that time...you could get some really nice days. You could just as easily get torrential downpour, or snow. One of the benefits of Boston is that it is an easily walkable city, so it's better to visit when it's nice and you can take advantage of it. Obviously a lot of historical sites etc to check out, Bruins or Celtics are a blast (I may be biased because I'm more of a basketball guy, but Celtics games are generally better attended and have a more exciting crowd energy these days), definitely plenty of good places to eat and drink as well. In addition to Boston proper, definitely hop on the red line over to Cambridge and the Harvard Square area, some good food, bars, and shops etc and a different vibe than the main city.

You can also do MegaBus or Bolt bus Boston-NYC for pretty cheap (like $20) and perhaps a bit better safety record than fung-wah ;)

It's not that cold here. Daytime temps in February range from -5 to 0C, and in March, from 0 to 5C. We have cold and warm spells, of course, but those are average temps. The absolute coldest temps you're likely to see would be around -15 to -20C, and that would be at night. Boston is one of the windiest cities in the US, though.
