Refinishing ART100 into a goldtop?

Hey guys,

I was thinking about buying a gold Ibanez ART100, dropping in some BG humbucker-sized P90s, and refinishing the back. I'm hoping to sort-of copy the '56 Gibson goldtop color scheme, with the natural wood satin back and neck.

 

How would I go about masking the top to keep the nitro from getting on it? Would regular masking tape/paper work or do I need to do something else. Is this a viable project?
