Members Tubefox
It seems we have a lot of technophiles and gear nerds on HC. I figured I'd make threads for those of us who are, frankly, borderline Luddites. Well, maybe not "opposed" to technology, but you get what I mean. Those of us who, for whatever reason, just don't see any reason to have a bunch of fancy effects, modeling software, or whatever. I fall into this category obviously. I know how to operate modeling software, had some for a bit, just didn't see any use for it. Most of the effects seemed more like toys than stuff I'd ever actually use. I like effects, but just don't bother using them. I'll play with a friend's delay pedal and think it's cool, but just can't ever see myself owning one. Anyone else still subscribe to the "Guitar - Cable -Amp" set up? Why?
Members Pascal
Guitar-cable-amp is often too much for me. Too many knobs. Most of the time, I just play an acoustic.
Members Kap'n
"Option anxiety" is one reason to avoid more than a couple of stompboxes.
Members sylvesterlowery
Well, I don't consider myself a luddite, but I've never been a huge fan of modelers and rack gear. I love pedals, I'm a cheap pedal whore. And I use a solid state amp. And shred-type guitars to play stoner rock/doom metal. I'm more of an anomaly. Members Deadbeat Son
I'm a "guitar-->cable-->amp" guy for the most part. I have added a pedal tuner and sometimes an OD pedal into the chain though. Other than that, I don't like effects for my music; this doesn't mean I can't appreciate them in others' music, but I don't have a need for them. Sometimes I plug into a looper pedal at home, for instance if I need to come up with a lead over a particular chord progression for a song the band is working on. Members Brian Krashpad
I'm a "guitar-->cable-->amp" guy for the most part. I have added a pedal tuner and sometimes an OD pedal into the chain though. This is mainly me. My two main rigs for my louder bands are tube heads, one (a Sunn 200S) requires a dirt pedal, the other (a Sovtek MiG 50H) has a master volume so I don't even use that with the Sovtek. Occasionally I'll use a volume pedal. In lower volume situations I have been using a Super Champ XD, but almost more in spite of it having modeling than because of it. I'm either on the clean channel, or the Vox setting for my second channel distortion, and as far as effects, if anything a touch of reverb or some delay on certain songs. I could never deal with having a batch of pedals or trying to run multiple effects all at once. I'm mostly about a decent clean sound, and a decent dirt sound. Once I have those 2, I'm there. Members scuzzo
why only choose primary colors when you have such a wide spectrum? why be limited to one or 5 dry tones when the limits are unbounded... hey you can dig what you dig,, but i love the new wave in guitar and home studio technology.. save for the miss guided attemps by gibby with the flaming chicken 10.. Members MONGOOZ
i am an avowed luddite. i like guitar designs from the 1950's i like amp designs from the late 60's - early 70's i use basically 2 pedals.....a delay pedal that's at least 8 years old and my 1988 Marshall Guv'nor pedal. now i DO appreciate some technology in my mic's, P.A. gear, recording gear
Members cratz2
I like a little of this and a little of that. I've had the place to myself most of the day. I spent a couple hours plugged into a Tweed Deluxe with only 3 knobs... one of which doesn't really do much. And I plugged into the AC15H1TV for a while, on the EF86 channel. There are a couple 'switch' options, but really only one 'knob'. Then I did non-guitar related stuff for a bit since it was pretty warm outside. And I'm currently plugged into the latest and almost greatest Line 6 HD500 run into a Prowler tube amp. I've used the Deluxe Reverb model, the Plexi model and the Dr Z model. Members Jersey Jack
Guitar - Cable -Amp I'm heading in this direction, to be sure, but given my country leanings I can't do without a delay, a compressor, a volume pedal....
Members Hubert Stumblin
Yeah, I'm pretty much a guitar-cable-amp guy. Maybe if the amp has verb or tremolo I'll spin a bit of that over it. Other than that maybe every few years I break out a wah-wah pedal. That's about it. Kinda hard to go wrong with a good simple rig.
Members Elias Graves
While I'm in no way opposed to effects, I don't use any myself. I plug my Kat or my Godin into a Champ and play. It help, I suppose, that I'm not trying to cover anyone else's songs or sounds. Nobody can claim I did it wrong because I wrote it. I've messed around with a bunch of stuff but none seemed appropriate for my tunes, which focus on story. The guitar is there to set a rhythm and a mood. Members soundcreation
98% of the time I'm just straight into my amp and quite happy with that. I have a tube screamer that gets some use...a flanger that gets some use...a wah that occasionally gets some use, and an old school roland space echo tape delay that's fun to play with. But yeah I keep it pretty simple with guitar. Drums on the other hand, I'm straight out Roland edrums MIDI triggering the best possible software through an 8 core mac pro. So I don't think I'd call myself a full on Luddite.
Members MyEmergency
I run one OD pedal in my mix and that's because my amp is a single channel amp, I prefer a no nonsense setup.... although I have been considering a delay pedal for some time now. Members notjonahbutnoah
Hmmmmmm.... Well, the polytune is the only thing in my signal path that even flirts with "digital." Excluding that, everything is 100% analog. Phase, Delay, Overdrive, and a Boost. Regular humbuckers, well, with coil tap, and an all tube, 2 channel head with semi-modern speakers in the cab. So... I'm more luddite than not, but I still use effects, they're fun. I'm an advanced, daywalking luddite.
Members LeftyTom
I like technology, but simply not an "early adapter". I put that down to the "newest, latest, greatest" being expensive when it first comes out. By waiting a bit, I can see if the product has lasting usefulness, and the price usually drops (or the design is copied by someone who does it better or charges less). Recently, I came coming to understand that pedals should "tint" my tone, not "color" it.
Members Grantus
I have a Boss Slicer, a Devi Ever Eye of God, a Heavy Electronics Havana Radio pedal, a Fuzz Factory type of pedal, a Fender Mustang I and a Fender Vibro Champ XD. I guess I'm not a Luddite.
Members Oldskool Texas
I like a little reverb and maybe some tremelo or a touch of delay, but usually it's just guitar & amp for me. Racks of effects, modeling amps and robot guitars would just get in the way and ruin the experience.
Members BlackCat
I'm not a Luddite by any means but I like to keep my guitar rig simple.
Members joecool1963
I'm a luddite according to our beloved(not) Henry over at Gibson. I'd live to see affordable Les Pauls with options like an affordable p-90 based Studio, not firebirds that are robotic {censored}. I use tube amps and analog pedals, but I have had plenty of modelers. I think the style of the music you play and like dictate your level of luddiiteness... Members dughaze
I'm a luddite big time. I use an overdrive, wah-wah, delay, and tuner but I am still a luddite. If I could push the button I would uninvent the internet, credit cards, cable tv, and cars beyond the year 1972.

Members Mr_GoodBomb
I just don't have a use for it. I don't need a {censored}load of sounds, and if I want something incredibly different, I want a different guitar. The digital stuff I've owned has sounded crappy, so it doesn't appeal to me much. Hardly a "technophile," I'm a videographer for a living.
