LOTS of work: Completely stripped down to bare wood. Used Rereanch nitro coral, 3 coats 3 days between each coat, and I did top and bottom separately so it took ~18 days to paint the color, then 2 coats of Reranch tinted nitro clear, so 12 more days. Let it hang in my garage for 30 days before I started wet sanding. i went from 800 to 1000 to 1500 to 2000 grit, being very careful not to sand through anywhere. Probably have 4 or 6 actual hours in it over 2 months. This batch was more orange than it was supposed to be, but I'm going to keep it. I'll refinish another body in coral sometime this year.

Almost no work: This one took a grand total of about 1 hour of actual work over three days. Scuffed up the existing paint, hit it with two coats of Krylon Celery bought at Ace Hardware. Hit it with 1000 grit paper then 2000 grit paper though I screwed up the back of the guitar, this was only a 'testing' job anyway. Looks 95% as nice as the Reranch strat above.

ZERO work on my part: This is my punk special. It's a cheap POS with a serious attitude! The previous owner painted it and 'branded' the headstock and body. It's ugly as sin, but it conveys what it's supposed to.

This one looks really good in the pic. 95% as good as the painstaking, everlasting re-ranch job you say? Nice.

This one used to be black. I sanded the shiny off the black, then several coats of Krylon over a few days. Then a few more coats of Krylon clear over a few more days. I didn't sand at all except at the very beginning. Just had it hanging from a coat hanger. I had no idea what I was doing.

Looks neat, satin-ish. It developed these little cracks in the clear coat, makes it look 50 years old. Unintentional, but cool. This was my first real electric guitar, I loves it.

You can really see the cracks I'm talking about on the upper bout in this next one:
