I've been a fan of Rock Band ever since I started seeing people making the jump to real instruments after playing the game for a while. Certainly if you can actually use your favourite instrument, that means that real players won't be quite so handicapped when playing!

So far, these products haven't worked. There have been a couple of attempts at this, both commercial (never released) and open source. I played with the open source one for a while, and it really didn't do all that well although it was fun for a while

 

There was a "Guitar Learning" program at the CES show this past week that used this chord recognition tech. I thought it rather telling that the program couldn't show you when you made an error- you played through the entire riff and it just told you that you scored 75% at the end, but you have no idea where the error was. The demo-er couldn't get it to work reliably, even with power chords- he admitted you couldn't get 100%, and even on the most basic exercise (4x533->4x755->4x533 at about 60 bpm) he got only 90%

Quite useful if you already have the appropriate gear and want to play Pro Mode on Rock Band3. Otherwise it's probably much easier and cheaper to just grab the Squire Strat controller that comes out in March.
