Members Skyforger
I put single sized humbuckers in this? That's my 1990 Squier Bullet, and I really can't decide what I want it for tone wise. I really love the heavy metal sound, but I've got six other guitars for that. I recently bought a 1991 Squier Stratocaster for my Dad with 50's Classic Vibes in it, and I loved the tone on them and I would love something like it, but I don't play much clean. Is it worth having the option to?
Members Brian Krashpad
HBs in your only Strat when you already have a bunch of HB guitars? Yes that'd make you a bad person. And I don't even favor Strats. But everyone should have a S-S-S, or at worst a Fat Strat that's splittable. It's a rule.
Members HELSTRUME
No. I just have one humbucker in my Strat, and one volume. What pickups are you looking at?
Members Skyforger
No. I just have one humbucker in my Strat, and one volume. What pickups are you looking at? Possibly some Seymour Duncan Little59s, something with twin rails or something similar. If I do go with three singlesize humbuckers, they'll all be tappable and wired to a coil split. Members mikesr1963
Just put together another pickguard with the HB you want. Then you can switch it back anytime you want.
Members diceman1000
FWIW, if you put single size buckers in it... they're still buckers:poke:
Members Cobalt Blue
I've posted this before, so excuse the repetition, but I have one of these, and like it very much. And there are Stratty tones to be had, in case you might ask. Members Skyforger
Ah, I have heard Strats with fantastic tones even though they're loaded with buckers. Funnily enough, Stuart Anstis (ex-Cradle of Filth) demo'd a G-Dec for me a few months ago, and he's using Little59s in a Strat. I suspect the awesome sounds were more to do with the amp, but he's a fantastic player nonetheless.
Members blackheartsfan
It appears as the the OP has the Squier by Fender Bullet 1 which is a smaller body when compared to current Fender/Squier Strats so a drop in pickguard may be difficult to locate. If you want vintage sounding rails, then dimarzio pro tracks.
Members Fireproof777
I say go for it. I have a Carvin Bolt with twin blade HBs in it and I love the tones I get out of it.

You're damn right a pickguard is hard to locate. I need to get a new one anyway, and I have to have it imported. Also, the body is routed for singlecoils, and I'm not willing to have it altered. Members Brujo13
ID keep it SSS, if you wanna Change the pups, id go with an over wound bridge, mostly cause I can see you have guitars with singles in. other positions but this is the only one with a single in the bridge
Members Belva
I wouldn't go too high end on this guitar. The GFS little killers sound pretty good for a $$ amount that's more appropriate to the guitar. The trouble with these, as well as many sc size 'buckers, is they lose way too much volume when split. So go series/parallel. Your get that stratty sound, less volume drop and still have hum canceling.
Members Skyforger
That Washburn has a coil tap, but you're right, it loses way too much volume when it splits. I'm thinking I'll go with some classic singles rather than buckers. None of my guitars do clean particularly well, and after some thought I've decided I would quite like the option to play some clean should the mood take me. As I said, I played with the 50's Classic Vibes in my Dad's Strat, and I loved them. Also, I think it would suit the guitar better. It's not a metal axe, and I would feel bad if I tried to make it something it isn't
Members Brujo13
Gfs pups are nice, I would recommend getting a Texas wound set, with the hotter bridge pup, I mostly play single coil guitars and if the bridge pup is vintage wound it always seems to lack balls, so id imagine that some one who has humbuckers in all their guitars would feel a lack of power in the bridge pup

Even though you're a metal guy you never know when you might be inspired by something in a Strat vein. Then you'll be glad you have it in your arsenal. Even though you're a metal guy you never know when you might be inspired by something in a Strat vein. Then you'll be glad you have it in your arsenal. You're also right. I've been listening to demo clips for Wilkinson Vintage WVS pickups (inexpensive classic vibes) with 6.4k resistance in all positions. They've got the tone I'm looking for. Someone did say earlier that I should go for a slightly higher resistance in the bridge, in case I want to rock it up a bit? I forget who, but in reply, I think I'll be okay. Should I want to give it some beans, I'll turn to my good old humbuckers.
Members Skyforger
I'll post again shortly with a few variations of what I think it should look like when it's finished. Please let me know if I'm butchering a classic? It was my first guitar so it's fairly sentimental, and I'd hate to ruin it.
Members Skyforger
Okay, here are three variations of the finished article. Obviously there are more possibilities with this colour scheme I have going on, but I wanted a little contrast rather than completely matching hardware. So, here goes.. White hardware on black guard Aged hardware on black guard Black hardware on white guard Now, I could always go for an aged guard or have black stuff on a black guard and vice versa, but I'm tired and I couldn't muster the energy to make more mock-ups. Let me know what you think
