Great deal on Presonus Recording software

That's a good deal. I just picked up a couple of PreSonus interfaces at work (just got the new firewire cards this afternoon) and I'll be delving into StudioOne Artist sometime next week. I've touched it a few times doing an install for a client a few months ago and while he went with another platform I was really impressed with it's workflow. It seems a bit simplistic at first, but it's extremely intuitive once you start.

Lack of VST support is a letdown, but the upgrade path to Pro (which does support a bunch of plug in types) is worth taking the plunge on this IMO. I know a few guys that have dumped their DAW's for StudioOne in the last year or so.

Call me stupid but...I would really like to start doing some recording. I have a Dell Dimension 2400 computer. I don't have a recording interface yet. I also have a Shure Sm57. So is this software a good buy or should I wait and see what comes with whatever recording interface I get (they usually come with software I think?)

All the PreSonus stuff comes with this exact version in the bundle.

And to be honest unless there is something you really think that you need from this whatever is in the bundle is usually pretty decent albeit slightly stripped down. But unless you are doing more than 48 tracks with multiple VSTi's and a bunch of other crap it's not anything you'd miss.

So I just got a Zoom H1 recorder today. Is something like this what I need to record with the usb cable?

I could record and play it into audacity with the headphone out but nothing with the usb.

Is the problem in my settings and audacity not recognizing usb as a mic?

Try going into the hardware settings in Audacity and selecting the Zoom as an input source. Now I'm not positive that it'll work like that because it's a seperate recorder and it might be designed just for file transfers. But if it shows up as an audio device in your OS anywhere than it should be able to be selected as an input.

I don't know if the H1 is meant to be used as a usb interface into another recording software per se. As I understand it, it is it's own studio. However, you could hookup up the headphones out to a computer software via the soundcard line in. The Mustang I is another thing. Once you hook the Mustang I to your computer, I believe it loads it's asio drivers. (Or else you do it with the CD that comes with it or a download from their site. Can't remember but you can check with the manual.) Once that's done, you go into Studio 1 under options/audio device. There will be a dropdown menu there that will allow you to choose the Fender Mustang ASIO drivers.

I tend to record using the Mustang with it's own Fuse effects set or the Toneport which allows me to use the Gearbox or Pod as my effects so I don't mind not having access to third party VSTs in this version of Studio 1.

I still have Reaper which allows me access to the VST's. I like the clean easy interface of Studio 1 and the effects they have in there.

What do you need to use this in terms of interface with a newer laptop?

A cable that converts 1/4" plug to USB??????

There are cables that convert 1/4 to usb. http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/SoundTech-LightSnake-GuitarKeyboard-USB-10ft-Cable?sku=332600

However, you can still plug into the line in of your sound card, 1/8 to 1/4

Or you can use something like a toneport or m-audio interface.

(And countless other ways, but the ones I mentioned are the least expensive)

When I open studio one I get a screen that give me 2 choises. Creatse new song or Open existing song.

I go Create new song and it give me choice of

Empty song

Audiobox usb

Sirebox

and so on.

There is not much to do any kinds of option there. I can go empty song and get the recorder going but nothing records.

Here's me playing over a Chemical Romance BT

I'm really not okay

Used the Mustang I usb to the Studio 1. Supersonic amp, added Presonus Compressor and Beat Delay.

The Mustang USB Asio drivers have to be installed to your computer. I can't remember if that happens when you first plug the Mustang usb into your computer or if you have to get it at Fender Fuse or if it's a CD that comes with it. But the drivers have to be in your computer in order for you to hear the amp on your computer.

After that, here's what the setup looks like on Studio 1

After you choose the Mustang Asio, you can press the control panel to get settings similar to this

I have the interface that came with the Lexicon Alpha. Would the Studio 1 work with that?

I don't see why not.

The major drawbacks to this software is that it doesn't recognize mp3. You have to convert to wav and the mixdown is in wav format so you have to convert that to mp3. It doesn't recognize vsts.

Other than that, I'm really pleased with it.

I'm happy that you're enjoying this Frets :)

I think this is an amazing deal. As soon as I read about it at KVR I purchased my copy.

Regarding the limitations this has (e.g., MP3 encoding, VST support), another cheap option is Tracktion 3 Ultimate Bundle. MP3 import/export works via LAME, VST plugins are supported, and the included video tutorial makes it very easy to use.

I had tried it a few times before and never liked the interface, but for $20 I decided to buy it and was pleasantly surprised by it. The downside is that it's 4 years old and it shows. It was last updated 3 years ago. Some bundled content is old and/or only works in Tracktion (although there are free updates in some cases), MIDI could improve, apparently some plugins will not work, time-stretching sound is mediocre, etc.

In spite of these issues, I think that for $20 it is worth it for the video, content such as Garritan Personal Orchestra, and included plugins. I would really like to see an updated Tracktion 4...

Thanks Fretts, I found the uninstalled Asio drivers in my Fender fuse file under Addition software.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Update: I have the usb recording to Audacity. Now to work on Stuio One.

Oh and my Zoom H1 recorder works as just a mic also. I can use it just to mic my amp or record and put stuff straight to my computer.

Hey Frets, Were you able to download and install EZ Drummer, Guitar LE, and Kore Player with your version? I haven't been able to as it tells me to load a DVD. I think Presonus is working on a fix for it though.

No, it kept asking for a CD as well. I will check on it with Presonus as well. Let me know if you find out if they fix it! That really makes it a crazy good deal if you get those things as well.

Check the Studio One forum at the Presonus website. Under one of the threads about this issue, an admin posted links for the downloads to the individual product websites. The EZ Drummer website you just have to copy the serial number they gave you originally with your download and register to use it when downloading the EZ Drummer. There are several steps but it works. The others are easy. Just download the free software from their website.

:D

In fairness, I had never even heard of the song till last night but what the hey... it's all rock and roll!!!

Another tip people may want to check out. I have not tried it myself on my Mac, but read about this from PC users who already had some of the included content (e.g., EZDrummer, Kore)

Create a VstPlugins Folder (in the Presonus or Studio One folder)

Add the dll and related plugin files there

Restart Studio One so that it will scan for the new plugins

One person renamed his Guitar Rig 4.dll to Guitar Rig 3.dll to get it to work

Another person renamed a different plugin to Guitar Rig 3.dll and another different one to ezdrummer.dll, and both seem to work. May not work with all plugins.

Yet another person used it with EnergyXT, and that one seems to allow the use of other VST plugins.

Same as above, someone did it with XLUTOP Chainer.

Even with these "hacks" people are still talking about the possibility of upgrading to the Pro version in the future, if this is a DAW that they'll use.

I can't answer any technical questions since I don't use Windows, but here's a resource:
