Silverburst SG?

It's tax return season, and I got a hankerin' for a spankerin'!

Actually, I was considering buying a Gibson SG in silverburst. Anyone have one? Pics?!

Backstory: I've been playing for almost 15 years now. Previously, I'd get budget and copy guitars and upgrade them. Finally, I just went ahead and got an American Tele, and then a Gibson Les Paul. I couldn't be happier.

Next up is either a Gibson SG or Explorer :thu:

(BTW, I'm not knocking Agile, etc. This is MY personal choice, what works best for me)

This one is one of the limited edition Guitar Of The Week models

It's an SG Standard

But now GC/MF are carrying an SG Standard in Silverburst with coil splitting. It looks pretty much the same as mine.

P.S. I 'd recommend the SG over an Explorer unless you mostly play standing up. Sure you can play an Explorer seated, but they're just not as comfy. I find that the more awkward the design of my guitars, the more they get neglected and become case candy. Although, I do have myself on a waiting list for the new Dethklok. I just can't help myself.

Well holy {censored}, that is a SWEET looking SG :thu:

Yeah, that new Standard in Silverburst is the one I'd go for.

The Dethklok Explorer looks incredible, but I've yet to see it listed anywhere (except Amazon, which doesn't seem quite right).

Thanks, those were a hot model when it came out. For some odd reason, Gibson actually had them priced less than the regular production run SG Standards and when the 400 quickly sold out, some folks were actually flipping them for as much as $1800 on ebay.. I almost missed out on the deal because I was waiting in line for another shipment to come in to Sweetwater which never happened, meanwhile I passed up other opportunities at places like FQMS.com But then MF got a few more in and I snagged one. But now that they are a regular production run with the added benefit of built in coil splitting, I think the original GOW run are "no biggie".

I hurried up and got in line with the Dethklok because I read somewhere in the internet that it was also a limited run model of around 400. I have no idea if that's true or just internet forum BS, but I thought I'd get in line and if I later discover that its specs are different than what I've seen described from the NAMM convention, then I can always pull the plug later. I like that it's spec'd with BB 1 & BB2 pickups and I don't see any particular Dethklok doodles on it. Although I understand there will be something on the truss rod cover. And of course, that much, or even something at the 12th fret, would be fine by me. I just wouldn't want any cluster-f@#k like they've done with the Jonas Brothers Melody Maker.

The dealer I spoke with said they expected them at the end of February. But with the way Gibson has been lagging behind after the flooding, that might be about two months worth of optimism.

I've always thought of it as relatively well balanced. I find that some of the Epiphone SGs are more prone to that. But I'm a fan of these straps http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-PER-P25-LIST They are actually 3" wide (don't know why they advertise them as smaller than they actually are - I've bought quite a few of them). But they've got good tactile grip and cure most neck droop issues unless maybe you're doing gymnastics on stage. Those straps with the Dunlop ergo strap locks are an inexpensive combo that work real well together. I advise the locks if you're on stage because the button holes in the suede straps can become a bit slutty if you're not sportin a big button. ;)

So that's a total of $19 for a great feeling, non-slipping, non-guitar dropping geetar sling.

I know this is all purely a matter of taste, but I find my 84 Explorer to be more comfortable to my Gordon Smith SG in every way. With the explorer, my arm rests on the top wing and the strings are at the perfect position. My SG is still awesome, though, so it's hard to go wrong with either.

Yeah, I've discovered that myself - at least when standing. Resting your forearm on that top wing does indeed rotate the front of the guitar up just a bit which does seem to aid the attack angle. I've noticed that folks like Allen Collins would routinely have their guitar strap going up over the top of that wing which helps impart just that bit of rotation, and of course stops the forward rotation. :thu:

I'm just more of the recliner style rock star  where the Explorer can be a hair unwieldy.

But I do own 2 and this will be the 3rd if I hang in there with it. It will be joining an Epi Korina Explorer and a Gibson Mahogany Pro Explorer with 496/500 p'ups. So this one would be a different critter with the more vintage voiced BBs.

I have a robot SG silverburst. I really need to take some pics but I haven't gassed for another guitar since I bought it Sept 09.

Ebony fretboard, binding is awesome looking and super easy to tune in between songs or even change tunings. I just charge it once a month (and it's the only electric I play) and never have problems with it running out of battery.

You can tune it manually if you need to and the only negative to the robot part is that you can't leave the string long past the tuner because it causes the robotics to go wacky if it is touching another string while tuning. But I just bring a pair of clippers in case I break a string (which is rare). Also the pickups aren't wax potted so it is prone to some feedback at loud and gainy settings.

They go for less than the regular SG silverburst on ebay (like around $1000) and sam ash still has them for around $1000 new if you can find one. But seriously, it was a $3200 guitar when it came out and feels like it should.

Once the Deathklok arrives you will have the trifecta of awesome. That's some hat trick.

Yeah, and this summer I bought a MIM Fender Telecaster FSR in Silverburst as well, so it will make a total of four SBs in my collection.

I also bought this guitar almost two years ago and saved it up for my son for his grad school graduation present. I just gave it to him this last September.

I'll have to ask him to bring it by so I can take a group photo of all 5 (no photos in the can yet of the tele)
