Jet City Amps? Soldano?

Invited the guy from Jet City Amps to watch this thread and answer any questions. He said he would check it out.

First question for me. These are obviously built to a price-point. I know that it says Mike Soldano approves the components. For the money, just how road-tough are these amps compared to the other foreign-made amps in this price range?

Reportedly they follow the Soldano tradition of using thick PCB's with heavy traces....which is a good sign! These things are brand new though so time will tell how reliable they are.

i went to the guitar center farther north and they also had this amp, i played it, it sounded the same as the one in spotsy. kinda thin, annoyingly trebly despite the fact that both occasions i was playing a gibson and had the presence down and bass up. but for the price its what you'd expect, just not for me at all.

played one the other day. I was trying to decide between a Marshall Haze 40 and this amp. The EL84's bring in a nice midrange , but it lacked a bottom end.(Lots of amps like that nowadays picked the Matrshall Haze for it's warmth and better sounding clean channel

Okay, I might be behind a bit here, but just got a new GC catalog, and it has a new line of amps by Jet City, designed by Soldano. 20 Watt all-tube head, looks like it's about like the size of the new Marshall Haze mini-stack. $500 for the half-stack, looks like a pretty nice little amp...

Can't even find them on the GC website yet. Looks pretty sweet, though:

My GC had the Jet City / Soldano and its Eminence loaded Ix12 in their sound room.

We cranked it pretty good and It was better than I think its getting credit for.

It was way more aggressive than the other low wattage tube amps I played with the exception of the Blackstar mini stack(amazing amp).

We put a Bad Monkey in front and honestly it sounded better than $299 for the head and did I say Loud. 20 watts can be very very loud.

I bet a 4x12 closed back would just sizzle with this.

IMO it had a bit of the SLO vibe but more Luck13 clone tones over all.

Hi there all,

Steve thanks for the invite - I know I'm a little slow to reply lately, with launch happening now and with NAMM only about 45 days away, you can imagine how much we have going on.

Reading the various comments in the forums and the emails I get directly, I can see the impressions are pretty wide-ranged. Of course my personal opinion is we've delivered an amazing amp - but that's what my opinion SHOULD be - one can't expect to succeed at a new endeavor without being passionate about one's product.

So, I'm completely biased on this topic (pun intended) but I'm certainly interested in feedback, input, and questions either here or my email: doug@jetcityamplification.com

yo. D.

Honestly, I tried one today. I'm sure at higher volumes, it cranks pretty good...but I plugged a Gibson into it, played if for a few minutes, and walked away rather unimpressed. I'm sure if I had one at home, and really tweaked it, I'd love it. Just wasn't completely taken with it. It was next to the 5 watt Blackstar mini-stack, and it was about on par with that one. Guess I should have just cranked it...but the lack of a second channel killed it for me, too. I'll try one again sometime...not gonna write them off yet. Did sound kind of thin to me, though...and I own a Vox...:D

When a single 12" or 10" speaker is used, tuning the cabinet is the key to getting any kind of fullness. I think alot of manufacturers may miss this and just make the cab a good size, seal it up and hope for the best, as ridiculous as that sounds. A 12" cab that has gotten good reviews for being rather full sounding is the Epiphone 12" cab designed to go with the Valve Junior head. It's a partial open back.

Both the Jet City and Blackstar cabs are sealed...and small. No lows...

A 4x12 can do well sealed. Otherwise, even a 2x12 has to just the right size to avoid thinness, if it's going to be a sealed-back design.
