NGD and the power of suggestion

So as opposed to me just posting a pic and sharing the joy, let me tell a story for whoever is bored.

I was on ProGuitarShop a month or so ago and got sucked in (due to GAS for Tele) by this:

Web site: http://proguitarshop.com/store/guitars-fender-limited-edition-fsr-models-c-1_659/fender-ltd-fsr-ash-telecaster-p-2346

So of course, I had to buy it. I've been wanting to add a Tele to my small collection. What's interesting is after watching the demo video and checking out all the pics at the store's web site, I thought it was going to be the most amazing guitar on the planet - enter power of suggestion.

So when the guitar came, it was great, and low and behold, it was the exact same guitar that they demoed in the video (check out pics below, marking match up). But as I started playing it, I noticed some flaws. For one, the nut was crap - 2nd and 3rd strings would "ping" when I did bends. Action was way high of course, at the nut and bridge. Frets were not done well cosmetically (sorry, no before pics), and I started noticing more and more the imperfections in the wood. The stock bridge pickup is clear and hot. The neck is muddy and lacks energy. I'm replacing both with Fender Texas Specials on account of I read good reviews on them. I don't know any better, hoping they work out for me.

What am I getting at here, well fortunately, I've got a great tech that I always send my new guitars to after about two weeks of ownership for a new nut, fret leveling/dressing/polishing, and a set up. So the things that I ran into with the neck didn't bother me.

I was a little concerned about the imperfections in the wood, thinking it was because I bought a MIM, but quickly got over it, and noticed (via internet) that the Americans have some imperfections in them as well - check out the pic I found of the American with the wood knot in it.

Bottom line is now, after some after market work, I'm very, very happy with the guitar. But a buyer that didn't have the extra funds for after market work would? be dissapointed with some of the issues I encountered on the stock model.

American made with imperfection? Maybe some folks would like it:

My tech does amazing fret work! Look at that shine! Bends like butta!!

I suppose when someone's telling you an item is amazing, you have to play "consider the source." That store has probably just realized that a positive review on their YouTube channel means a faster sale.

Still, I'm glad you got it worked out, it's a nice geet. The imperfections in both cases I wouldn't know to even point out, they just seem like things you get in wood!:idk:

your photo marked "" Some imperfections" is not imperfections at all that normal grain track in ash. and if can be found in lots of ash guitars..

Some folks call it "worm trails" but its simply grain that been cut in half and they always do that slight herringbone pattern.

Cool - thanks for the info. I stand corrected. It was on my mind at first, but I'm over it now.

So how much did it run you with everything? Could you have bought a used MIA tele.

You should post your review on the youtube vid.

The tech work was 75, pickups 113 (I think) and the gee-tar was 549. All together about 730 or so. I suppose I could have gotten a used MIA (with a hardshell case I think), but I didn't look into it.

It's a trade-off. You might have gotten lucky on a used MIA but you might have inherited someone elses problem as well. Not a lot of difference btn the two in my mind, particularly with the Standards. Nice lookin Tele and and the price is not bad for a guitar you're now happy with.
