Members mike42
I think "spar varnish" has become more of a marketing term in the last few decades, than anything that actually identifies the type of finish that's labeled that way. The old spar varnish was intended to remain tacky to provide protection from the weather, and I don't think you'd want to use it to finish any kind of household item. It seems to me that I did use some of the more recent stuff on something, and I think it probably had more solids in it, which will tend to make it kind of cloudy and opaque when it dries. I can't think of any advantage to using this on a guitar, unless you're going to use it as a boat paddle or some such.
Members Belva
If you wish to go that route I'd consider using Minwax gloss poly in a spray can.
Members webwarmiller
I've made homemade Danish Oil with it and have used it on lots of furniture with really good results. 1/3 spar varnish, 1/3 BLO, 1/3 mineral spirits. I'm lazy now and just use Watco brand Danish Oil....
