Used market for Les Pauls

I'm interested in buying a les paul. I've been saving for a while, and I've got about 1200 in cash that I can spend. How far is this likely to get me in the the used Les Paul market? Surely there's some stuff that's in my price range, right? Or is this the sort of money where I'll walk into the guitar store, plunk it down on the counter, and the guy at the desk will laugh and tell me to come back after I've mowed a few lawns?

Or, is 1200 sort of the bare minimum for a used LP, and my options will widen greatly if I wait a few more months and try to get into the 1500 dollar range?

$1500 would get you into a much bigger selection IMO. But I think that $1300 is the magic numnber for really good Classics to decent Standards range.

Now I haven't been shopping for either in a while so with the current economic climate and it being a buyer's market for the most part you could probably slide that $100 either way.

...and also, if you are comfortable and quite familiar with guitars you might try staying out of the stores altogether as they will want some of your budget just for their 'mark up'.

along with some sales tax.

Dont be afraid to make cash offers. Youd be surprised how low a seller will go. Cash is tough to turn down

depending on what model you're looking for, $1200 can go a long way in this economy. figuratively speaking, however, $1500 will get you in the door to almost any show though (if that matters to you).

people are asking insanely F'd up prices for some gibsons these days. avoid those flakes. my two cents.

I'd be fine with buying a guitar from an individual, I actually bought a flying v from somebody on these forums a couple years back, and it was a great experience. But the type of guitar that I'm looking for (les paul classic, honey burst) isn't really available close to my budget that I can find. I've been browsing ebay and haven't seen much, and there's nothing that I can see either here or on mylespaul.com that looks good.

For what it's worth, I wouldn't be going to a place like Guitar Center and hoping they have something used that looks good. I'd be going to the House of Guitars in Rochester NY, and browsing their selection there. I've been in before and I'd be very surprised if they didn't have something I wanted, even though you might be right about the markup. I'm hoping that I can avoid that at least a little by offering cash instead of credit or a payment plan.
