My brother has asked me to jam with him. He's into metal, progressive rock. So far, we've learned some 30 Seconds to Mars (1st album), Daughters of Mara, Cy-Breed.

Most of the stuff he wants to play are tuned in A, B, & C.

I have a very nice R7( Goldtop Les Paul), but don't want to mess with different (thicker) string guages, nor do I want to change the burstbucker pickups.

On my own, I play & write a lot of originals, & the covers I play gravitate towards blues and blues rock. Not that I have a problem with my brother's harder music, but I'd like to keep my LP stock to use for my own stuff since I love it's playability & sound.

I have an OLP (Korean Music Man Silhouette Special) in an HSS config.

Don't know if I should drop a higher output pickup in the bridge to accomodate heavier music, maybe install better (locking schaller) tuners, install better tone & volume pots (not too expensive), along with using heavy string guage for low tunings.....

...or..........

just buy another guitar (new or used) more suited to that kind of music (yes, I know that any guitar can play any style, but u know what I mean).

So:

upgrade what I have

or buy another guitar?

Thanks,

I would repurpose the OLP.

Would definitely be the less expensive way to go.

Was thinking of dropping a Dimarzio X2N in the bridge (leaving the two single coils stock), some schaller tuners, & new volume & tone pots. Pickup is around $75, tuners, maybe $60-$70, pots r like $5-$10 each. that's like a $165 total.
