The "I fail at guitar" thread got me thinking about all the (sometimes young) youtube hot shots that get posted around here covering other peoples songs....

But show me some unknown players on youtube and their original stuff.....

I hardly know any...the only one I can think of right now is this one I always post to show people how great MIJ guitars are....

I love this guy's little tune...

Nice idea. I think it's going to be tough to execute because few folks go to youtube looking for original music so it's hard for anything to get enough traction to be a "sensation". The fact that the very nice video you posted is produced as a guitar/pickup demo is telling.

This guy is a studio musician in Nashville and does a ton of amp demo vids on youtube for Fat Sound Guitars in Cary, NC. I love watching his demo vids. This guy has such great chops and always brings out new licks in every demo vid he does.

I can think of many many good examples, but I'm mostly a metal-head, so they'd mostly be metal.

The thing is, it's not always youtube that makes them a sensation. A lot of great musicians that are gigging and playing in bands post up youtube videos. Marcel Coenen, as someone posted, is a great example. His band Sun Caged is amazing! However, which came first, the popularity of the band or the popularity of first his site, then currently his youtube videos? (Marcel started out posting these vids on his own site in realplayer format long before youtube was popular, that's how I first found Sun Caged)

The two good exampled I can thing of is firstly Keith Merrow, who started writing and recording his own music at home (no band, no gigging, he wrote and performed everything himself) and posting youtube videos. These got so much attention that he is now working with major label musicians, getting attention from labels, endorsed by major manufacturers, and released his third homemade album to great success and for actual money this time. Point is, it all started with youtube and now he's getting a lot of attention.

The other I'd mention is Misha Mansoor, who similarly started out a teen posting clips on Soundclick, and now has gotten so much attention that his band is currently touring, signed, and he is regularly featured in all the guitar mags.

I liked how this guy {censored}ing went for it, and I keep it in my Favorites.

His other clips weren't quite as good, and he followed it up with an irritating one offering guitar lessons that put me off substantially (sorry if you're reading!) but that first clip remains a fave.

EDIT: Of course, he's really improvising over Jeff Beck's "Down", making it not an original, for which I apologize. I at first took "original" to mean unknown, and administer my own facepalm.

of course that coulson87 dude has chops, but i'm so sorry to see he's moved away from the bluesy stuff and gotten into the 80s whammy cheese metal also.

Could you give an example of 80's metal, because even the videos he's uploaded in recent months have been pretty bluesy.

in this case i admit that i was completely talking out of my ass, i only watched one video. i will, however, politely refrain from watching all those videos you posted. i guess i'm just more a of a 'peaks and valleys' kinda guy.

^^ They should, by rights ALL be original, but sadly very few are. I know of people who have had 'covers' removed.

I suppose people are probably sometimes a little afraid of giving away their really carefully constructed songs, but in general the really great song writers probably have little interest in the tube.

Great taste!!

But if you are going to post a Steffen's song with Jane, don't forget to post this one:

The dynamics and harmonies between the guitar and violin are just superb! and Steffen solo around 2:45 is just AMAZING! I never knew you could get that tone from a 335 until I saw this guy...

:D

I have seen so many guys with amazing chops and technique on YT but it is not the place to sift through a million clips to try and find someone that presses your buttons, I sure as hell do not have the patience. Music is in such a bad place right now and easily the worst I have seen in my 49 years. The bottom line is we are guitarist and someone playing a great 5 minute instrumental piece will give us a rise but is not going to change music right now. The bottom line is everything starts with a good song and till a few bands put a lot of this great playing along with great vocals and songs that people can relate with like it was done since it all started nothing will change. More guitars are sold worldwide now than at any point in history yet you would not know it since popular music is not guitar driven anymore. The young guys have to get out their and start performing and more clubs have to open up to letting young talent get a chance to develop, all it takes is one band to really knock the world on its ass to cause a chain of others wanting to do the same. The last time that happened was the Grunge movement, not my personal preference but it still shook up the world. I have been waiting and waiting for the next movement and I hope it happens before I am fu$#ing dead. But all in all it still all starts with strong songs, when you think of how many guitarist like Satch, Vai, Yngwie and the very select few that can sellout a few thousand seat theaters on instrumental music alone the percentage is about 1%.

Straycat, what a horribly bleak outlook you have on music. It's sad, because what you miss is the industry, not the music.

I have never witnessed a more exciting time in musical history, directly or through studying. Not even the advent of RECORDING could foreshadow this. From the advent of recording the industry took over. If they didn't want you, you didn't get your music out there. PERIOD. It was true of Motown, it was true of David Geffen. Nowadays, trends don't matter. Fads don't matter. There are millions of people out there making music, and they all have an equal opportunity to catch our ears. This means two things: the record industry signs and promotes fewer and fewer acts, and in turn you are going to need to look a little harder to find your music.

While you say "it's too many buttons to push", I say I discovered the last half dozen records I ADORE in exactly this manner. I like band A. I watch their video, and try Band B that is linked on the sidebar. WHOAAA! Turns out some obscure band from the netherlands is my new favorite.

There movement you're waiting for has been here for a while, but you're missing it. Get on youtube and actually start searching for the music you aren't hearing. Chances are it's out there. It's not just instrumental guitar rock - there's a little bit of EVERYTHING, and so much of it is FREE. Check out Bandcamp, an absolutely WONDERFUL site. Or Pandora! Last FM. Soundclick. Youtube. There are SO MANY WAYS to find music, and get music out to people.

Thanks guys! this thread is going a bit better now. Nice choices.

And yes it's never been better to be a musician. It's now accessible for everyone to make music. If that means people have to wade their way through more crap to find good stuff then so be it. It's worth it. Because no matter how "noble" or "pure" you think what ever rock music you like is....the fact is, it was MARKETED to you by someone. From the beatles to Zep to U2 to metallica to nearly everyone through major labels or with "indie" labels selling you the idea that you were into something "different" when you bought you're first nirvana record off of sub pop.

"Movements" like punk or grunge are a thing of the past. All access all of the time prevents that. The moment something even resembles being good it will be picked up through viral media. Nothing will ever have the "time" to grow like say grunge did. Get used to it cause there is no going back.

Sure we lose a few things....movements like that...the album format is probably dead too....but whatever. The fact I can record good quality (from a recording stand point...artistically remains to be seen..lol) music in an apartment is amazing.

I really do think that many rock fans have turned into cliquey rock versions of "jazz snobs", and they are too lazy to look for music themselves. I think there are a lot of people who really do want music "sold" to them. I admit it's easier...but no where near as rewarding.
