Members cephus
I've seen some guys put a strat neck pickup in a tele. Why would you do that? What is the difference in tone? I have a HH strat that i have been wanting to put a middle single coil in. Aesthetically, a chrome covered tele pickup would seem to be a better fit. On my SSS strats, I love the middle pickup and use it most of the time. How different do they sound?
Members cratz2
The traditional tele neck pickup is pretty dark and lower output than most strat pickups. It's not better or worse, but if you are used to a strat pickup, it's definitely different. I'd guess if you are a plug and play type guitarist, either one would be fine for you. If you tend to tweak the knobs on the guitar for infinite tonal variety and are coming from a strat, I could see why you might prefer a strat pickup in there. I think the GFS Fatbody neck pickup is quite strat-like... moreso than most traditional tele neck pickups and folks, myself included, seem to rave about them. I guess from a practical standpoint, having a bit more output will likely help things overall but I've always thought the cool thing about Teles is how bright the bridge is and how dark the neck is and how many great tones you can get from those two contrasting pickups. I agree with that assessment. The thing I love about tele's is the way the middle position sounds. With gain it thickens up almost to LP territory. Not sure if it would have the same character with a strat pup in the neck. For me the perfect tele setup would be a nashville style with a tele pup in the neck and a strat in pup in the middle. And of course a standard tele bridge pup.
Members cephus
I guess I am thinking that I can afford for the tele pickup to be darker sounding. The other two pickups are chrome covered humbuckers, which are also kind of dark. i am boosting the treble on the amp to compensate. a standard strat pickup might end up being too thin compared to the humbuckers. I was looking at the Neovin Hard Vintage "Overwound" Tele Neck Pickup.
