Question for Canadians who bought from Rondomusic (Agile, SX etc...)

I live in Canada, and that's one reason I haven't seriously considered getting an Agile LP even though I think I'd like one, and they seem like good deals.

Have any Canadians bought from Rondomusic? And if so, did you have to pay a lot of extra duties/customs charges?

Agiles seem like good deals for Americans, but after paying for shipping, and possible duties, I'm not sure if it makes sense to get something locally instead.

Yeah but where are you gonna get a new triple-bound set-neck abalone-inlay mahogany-maple-mahogany-ebony LP with AlNiCo pickups and TUSQ nut for $399?

And what keeps you from just putting together a shopping cart and seeing how much it would be? I did, using a Montreal postal code an AL-3100 that is $399 ends up with $104.81 shipping fees, no tax.

For some reason there was a used Agile Les Paul Jr double cutaway at the Long & McQuaid music store here in my city Ontario.

It was junk. Don't waste your money. They are like Jay Tursers of which can be had for $150 all day long here.

I could take a 1959 Les Paul, treat it like crap, get it in sad shape, and then sell it to a music store. Someone who comes by and plays one would not assume that all Les Pauls are therefore crappy.

:idk:

That's kind of the risk I don't want to take, since I can't try one out first. Could be a lemon that you saw at L&M, but how could we be sure? It's a risky business buying guitars over the internet, and even if they do have a good return policy, I don't want to think about how much it would cost to have it returned in case I don't like it.

you will pay the appropriate sales tax of your province on top of shipping charges..ie in Ontario i would pay an additional 13% that may or may not be figured into the shipping price

and depending on what courier they ship with(looks like it's UPS) there may be brokerage fees as well..USPS is the cheapest

No...

If they offered USPS as a shipping option, I'd do it because that's my preferred courier company. But as far as I see, they only offer UPS (from my experience... no way!!) or FedEx. Here in Quebec the tax is close to 14%.

I'll think about it, as it should be a good deal either way, considering what a Gibson could cost (I'm not saying an Agile is a Gibson, but you know what I mean).

Rondo only sends to Canada UPS. You don't pay any more tax or duties than sending any other way but the courier will hit you with a brokerage fee. My guess would be around $70 on top of taxs and duties on a guitar. I paid $40 brokerage on a $120 speaker from MF. UPS.

They phoned me and had it put on my card before they would deliver the package.

If you could have it shipped USPS the charge on my GFS guitar was $8 on top of the standard tax.

So that's about $56 in taxes, which puts an AL-3000 to about $560.00. Plus brokerage fees. And it looks like I may be forced to buy a hard case becase I live outside the US.

hmmm...I dunno. A Godin might be a better value, and I'd have a better chance of trying it out.

Thanks guys, I'll think about it.

plus shipping and brokerage fees. The brokerage is not the shipping, it is on top of it.

The government allows this because they would rather have you buy Canadian.

Man, I never realized that lol. With all those fees, I won't feel good buying a guitar after all of that. In the end, it may still be cheaper than what other companies are selling similar guitars for, but to me it's the principle. Having to spend all that money just in shipping, duties and brokerage fees just doesn't feel right. Or smart.

One thing I like about GFS (even if Agile may offer the higher quality guitar) is they offer USPS as a shipping service. That's so much better than UPS or FedEx.

After thinking about it, I'll probably pass on the Agile.

Shipping is what kills most US based deals for me. When I do order I get all my stuff delivered by a snowbird. That way I get free shipping and it makes for far better deals. The only downside is I have to wait until spring to get my stuff.

Also, have you checked out http://www.svkguitars.com/Models.html ? I was stuck in the BIG mall in Edmonton and went into a music store. I quite liked the hollow body and semi-hollow I played.

The Valkyrie II I got on closeout for a hundre bucks was very definitely not junk.

I buy guitars from the States all the time... you pay for shipping, the same tax as if you've bought from a local store... AND A BROKERAGE FEE!

The brokerage fee is what the shipping company, ie UPS, charges you to bring an item across the boarder and it can be a big surprise.

Godin...

why not support a canadian business? especially since they are made there.

Good point, but... that's like saying Americans should only buy Gibby's because they are MIA. It's all about choice. Pretty boring world if we all played the same thing. And to top it off, no more cheap guitar threads:cry:
