Members johnnyl80 Posted February 23, 2011 Members Posted February 23, 2011 I need a bridge humbucker for a Les Paul-ish guitar - mahogany body with maple cap, mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard, set neck, 24.75" scale, etc... The style I'm gonna play with it is hard rock, but more in the vein of "modern" bands like Airbourne, Buckcherry, Jackyl, etc., than the classic Zeppelin, Ac/Dc, Skynyrd, etc., stuff; the amp I'm gonna use is a Peavey VTM half stack, with one of the gain dipswitches on, so that it basicly sounds like a slightly hot rodded/boosted Marshall JCM 800. ... Oh, and I'd prefer to go for not-too-expensive brands that are easy to find on the used market and eventually resell, like Seymour Duncan, DiMarzio, Gibson, etc... Thanks!
Members clay sails Posted February 23, 2011 Members Posted February 23, 2011 I like my Seymour Duncan SH-6 (distortion). I don't play hard rock or heavy metal, I just like its clarity. My SH-4 (JB) is also a great humbucker.
Members 64DUECE Posted February 23, 2011 Members Posted February 23, 2011 I agree. I'm a Seymour Duncan fan. Distortion, JB, Alnico II Pro... Love 'em
Members scott944 Posted February 23, 2011 Members Posted February 23, 2011 Another vote for the ubiquitous Duncan JB. 4 wire hookup gives coil splitting options if you wish. Many USA Hamers had JB's in the bridge.
Members D34dBaWx Posted February 23, 2011 Members Posted February 23, 2011 I would also suggest the Duncan Custom Custom. I have one and really like it. I have also Had the Duncan JB. It's a nice one as well.
Members Crisco Posted February 23, 2011 Members Posted February 23, 2011 Gibson 498T or Dimarzio Super Distortion
Members Filter500 Posted February 23, 2011 Members Posted February 23, 2011 For that stuff I would use a JB.
Members johnnyl80 Posted February 23, 2011 Author Members Posted February 23, 2011 Bump for more suggestions...
Members Tidal Rhythm Posted February 23, 2011 Members Posted February 23, 2011 They're not cheap, but TV Jones' powertrons are the best humbuckers I've ever played for that perfect mix of clear & heavy.

Members Argh! Zombies! Posted February 24, 2011 Members Posted February 24, 2011 Found the JB too hot and mushy in my (naturally dark) LP. Saved by the grace of Alnico II Pro. Major clang.
Members photon9 Posted February 24, 2011 Members Posted February 24, 2011 I have a SD custom 5 in my LP and it sounds fantastic. Can't really go wrong with any of the suggestions. If you can wait a bit I would seriously consider a BG pup. There's a lot of fans around here, I'm sure some will be popping up any minute.
