The F-spaced are wider, but honestly, with a hotter pickup, I can't imagine anyone could hear a marked difference. I mean, all the time you are bending the strings, you are taking them from one pole piece to another and it doesn't sound like a radical drop off in volume.

:idk:

I guess I'd order the right one for the application if it was a new install, but there's no way I'd replace an F-spaced pickup that was already installed with a standard spaced one.

The poles on a f-space, hi E and low E are spaced further apart than standard correct? I have a Dimarzio on another sg and the poles don't line up...the low and hi E are hanging over the poles a bit.

A long time ago (in the 20th century, actually) the electric guitar world was divided between Gibson and Fender designs. One of the differences between the two was string spacing. In general, Gibson chose a narrower string spacing at the bridge than Fender, and therefore the polepieces on Gibson humbuckers were closer together than the magnets on Fender pickups. F-Spacing is a solution to an imaginary problem.

It's a somewhat legitimate aesthetic problem, but not much of a problem as far as the tone of the pickup is concerned. At least that's been my experience. I've used standard spaced pickups in guitars with Fender spacing many times without being able to pick up anything detrimental in the resulting tone of the guitar. As someone who prefers things to line up, however, I would prefer things to, um, line up. :D

Right, it just for looks... while I admit I'll buy an F-Spaced pickup for a guitar with a Floyd, I wouldn't pause for a second if I was using a non-F-Spaced pickup out of my box of parts. I've put in plenty of both and can't hear a difference.

Besides, can anyone hear it when you stretch a string away from the screws?

I've always thought it was for looks "It just looks wrong," and to sell more pickups... "I have an old pickup here I could used, but the spacing is different."
