Bias is low on my Bugera V22... Time for some new tubes?

My beloved Bugera V22 is sick (:D). At first it stopped making any sound even though the AC light was still on. I reseated the tubes and it made sound again but really low. The bias reading was 26VDC max. The range should be 39 - 44 VDC. I think it must be a bad tube but I'm not totally sure. I've had it for a year and I got it used so I'm not surprised if it needs a replacement set of tubes. What are your thoughts? What tubes would you recommend if that's the issue? Thanks! :thu:

Thanks. That's the first kind that came to mind. Do you think tubes are the issue?

Can't help you with that. I don't know much about the troubleshooting aspects of tube amps. About the only thing I can troubleshoot is microphonic tubes.

What I do know is that the tubes that come stock on the V22 are pretty crappy so it wouldn't hurt to replace them.

Also, the types of tubes it uses are pretty cheap and since it's a good idea to replace them anyway, I'd buy the new tubes and see if that fixes the problem.

my V55's Od sounds horrible and fizzy. Like completely unuseable...A tube swap might help

Right now the V22 sounds fizzy and {censored}ty even on the clean channel... sucks cuz I really love that amp. Been using it almost strictly ever since I got it.

That's what I'm thinking too. Even if it doesn't work it wouldn't hurt to have an extra set of tubes kicking around in my gear repair box. I'm going to go for it.

BTW, did you end up changing all of them? That's what I'm thinking of doing.

Yeah. I had one of the preamp tubes go microphonic so I just retubed the whole thing. It's only 3 pre and 2 power tubes so not a big deal.

Sorry I keep pestering you but did you end up using all 12AX7As in the preamp section? I guess 12AX7Bs are more for high gain. The V22 uses 2 As and 1 B. I assume the B is for the gain channel. If you used all As how did you like the gain channel after the swap? Was it a more bluesy type of gain (that's what I'd prefer it to be... I've rarely had the gain past 2). Thanks!

hrmm...off the top of my head I don't remember but I'm pretty sure I used the same tubes in all 3 positions. As for the gain, not sure if I'd describe it as bluesy but it's a nice smooth gain which is great for southern rock and classic rock which is what I play in my main band. Right now I'm getting all of my gain sounds from a line 6 M13 though. I like the amp's gain a little better but I'm lazy and with the M13 I only have to deal with a single pedal in front of me. It also saves stage space which is good since most places we play have tiny tiny stages. Sometimes on bigger stages I'll pull out the amp's footswitch and use the amp's gain channel but not too often.

Cool. Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it. :thu: I can't wait to get this amp back in action again.

Yep. It's a great amp. Before I got it I went through a B52 100 watt tube head, a peavey valveking combo, a peavey classic 30, a palomino 1x12 combo, a palomino head with various cabs, then finally settled on the bugera. I have since sold the peaveys but I did keep the palominos I use the bugera for about 90% of my gigs but the palominos are also great amps and I bring them out once in a while just for a change of pace. But the bugera is definitely warmer than the palominos. The switchable wattage from 13 to 22 is also very nice to have. Let's me crank it at smaller venues without pissing off the bar manager.

I really love my Bugera too. I play it almost every day and it's been all over with me. I've taken it to many blues jams. Usually it ended up being a "house" amp and I always got comments on how good it sounded from whoever played it. The way they sound makes you forget it's a "cheap" amp. I've had way more problems with my Vox AC30CC2 than my Bugera V22.

I just picked up an older Peavey Classic 30 for my Mom. That is a fantastic amp too. I bought it for her birthday but I was really hoping she wouldn't want it so I could snatch it up myself :). That was the best one in the shop though. We played through a few others and they weren't nearly as good as the one we ended up with.

Thanks again man. You've been a great help.
