Members mfdtim
Hey guys, First post here. I've been shopping for a new guitar to get after my wedding. I've played all 3 of the above, and I like all of them. All 3 are going to be in my price range, I guess I'm just looking for a best bang for my buck type thing. Opinions? Thanks in advance. Members mfdtim
So, I went and played all 3 again today after posting this and the Blacktop is out. I really like the G-400 and the SG a lot more. So I guess it's down to just those two.
Members soldierblue
Between those? The Gibson.
Members Fendson
If you like the G400 and the SG Special, I wold probably grab the SG special simply for resale value.
Members GAS Man
The Gibson doesn't need any mods so it gets my vote. The Fender might not need any either, but I'm happier with Gibson HB pickups. That being said, I am currently enjoying the hell out of a Epi G-400 that I modded with Gibson Burstbucker Pro p'ups. Members Floritar
Yes I have a faded LP and it is very nice, I would always pick a Gibson US made over any Epiphone anyway, even the Limited run ones, they really are just well better. Members lewzer
Every Gibson Faded SG I've tried in stores has been terrible. I've always preferred the G400's that were sitting nearby, ESPECIALLY the "Worn" G400, which comes with the bound fretboard.
Members kayd_mon
I have played multiple Gibson Faded SGs, and while there are some great ones, I have encountered some duds. There was one I really liked (and almost bought), but I noticed there was a hump in the fretboard around the 15th fret or so. Killed it completely. I'd lean towards the Gibson (better pickups, better resale), but play it first and check it out thoroughly. I have an Epiphone G400, and I think it's a nice guitar. I liked the stock pickups just fine. I switched them out, only because I wanted humbucker-sized P90s in there. I didn't want it for humbucker sounds, even though they sounded good to me. Good call eliminating the Fender. I love Fenders, but the Blacktop Fenders I've played have sucked.
Members Beyer160
Every Gibson Faded SG I've tried in stores has been terrible. I've always preferred the G400's that were sitting nearby, ESPECIALLY the "Worn" G400, which comes with the bound fretboard. I've definitely found all the Faded SGs on the wall at GC to be dogs. The Epi SGs definitely play a lot better, but the pickups are so-so at best and the neck dive is ridiculous. I tried out the blacktop Jazzmaster the other day and thought it played pretty well. The humbucker in the bridge made for an interesting combination- the middle position still chimed, but the bridge by itself was a little dark. The neck pickup sounded pretty nice. I played the Tele without plugging it in- nice neck, but I have no idea how it sounds.
Members Angry Tele
I had a Epi g400 goth SG and it was decent but Id get a Squier CV/C instead of any of those.
