Members awd83
Well, the title explains how I feel. I tried to trade my Soltero and my Vox VT15 for a Jet City 20 watt half stack. They basically wanted me to give them my stuff (including the guitar case which I didn't want to include). The amp head was $249 the cab was used for $59, so I figured with the 10% off of gear with the trade, that would be a pretty even trade, way more in their favor. They told me I could give them my stuff plus my case, plus $85 cash for the trade, so that made my stuff worth about $200 to them. They told me that the "list" price was what mattered, and the JC combo lists for like $600. I told him no one sells those for that, no matter what the list is, and he said it didn't matter. I guess it doesn't matter that my Soltero "lists" new for $999, and that VT15 probably "lists" for about $2-300. I offered $40 cash, and they "tried" to "take care" of me, made me wait around for about half an hour, then came out and said the absolute best would be $80 cash plus everything else. So that extra 30 minutes netted an extra $5 for my stuff. rant off, just needed to vent
Members ExiledCrow
Well, I knew they boned you HARD on trades ... maybe not that hard, but yeah it's kind of a sucker's game trading to a big outfit like GC.
Members brandass
Yeah, I went down that road a couple of times and gave up on it, I was never offered anything approaching a decent deal, it was basically a bend-over exercise. Oh well, good luck with the usual paths of commerce (SPAM thread, CL, ebay, etc).
Members Elias Graves
The only way a trade works out well at GC is if it's stuff you just don't care about or absolutely don't want to screw with CL or ebay. They offer 50-70 percent of the average for closed ebay listings in most case. So, your 500 used guitar is worth 250 in trade, plus the 10 off you get. Not great, but it is quicker than selling. Members sk8centilli
From what I see on their site, the cheapest used Soltero is priced at $350 and the amp is $90. They typically buy at 60% of what they can sell it for, so by that I would think they should have offered you $264 at the highest and $225 at the lowest. Basturds. Members webwarmiller
Trade's just how trade in prices work. You're going to get about 50-60% of the lowest price GC has for the same piece of gear in their used database.....you ARE selling it to them at wholesale after all. There is a Soltero for $349 as of now, so that's ~ $175-210......The Vox is as low as $75 so that's $38-45. In total your gear has a trade value of ~$215-255.....which is a 100% FAIR trade-in amount. As such I NEVER trade in gear....it sure doesn't seem to stop a massive influx of used gear at GC however....
Members Guitar Heel
People hate it, but eBay is the way to go if you want X amount of cash in X number of days. GC will violate you every time.
Members Stumpy Joe
selling a guitar/gear to GC = laziness I remember back when Sam Ash couldn't sell Gibsons, so they were buying up all the used stuff they could get. Even then, the offer they made on my LP Studio was so insulting that I just laughed.
Members eric.chambers
I'd light my guitar on fire and watch it burn before I'd trade it in at a place like that.

Members El Glom-o
selling a guitar/gear to GC = laziness Not always. I had two big speaker cabinets that I wanted to get rid of. Didn't want to deal with placing ads, answering phone calls, and, mainly, having unknown people coming over to check them out, so dealing them off to GC worked out well for me. I wasn't looking to get a whole lot for them, so GC's offer wasn't unreasonable.
Members WRGKMC
Yes you buy new and it looses 40% value the second it paid for. Thats why I rarely buy New. I buy good equipment used and it can only go up in value.
Members BryanMichael
Why go through with the deal then? Just list the stuff on Ebay and price it where you want it. You will make at LEAST the 10% you were saving by trading in and you might even get the 10% discount anyway when you walk in with cash in hand after the fact. Let me tell you, none of us is getting "screwed" by prices on gear. You have NEVER been able to buy as much decent gear for so little money than NOW. I remember before all of the online/catalog everything-under-the sun days (the 80's and early 90's) when local guitar stores used to advertise "15% off list price!!!" as a big sale and there wasn't much room to negotiate on ANYTHING. This is the golden age fellas. Live it up!
Members Pippers
Tried getting $100 for my Vypyr30 ($200 new) and the best they could do was $75. They told me to go on craigslist or something. Rather than dealing with homeless people showing up at my house "forgetting" the other $50, I called up a local shop and they had no problem paying me $100. Oh well. I would venture a guess that they weren't real interested due to the items being of similar value. It's not real exciting for a business to do "for trade" transactions. If what you were purchasing was higher priced I'm betting they would have come in with an offer closer to that 60% value.

I used to make a killing selling on ebay, nearly 1000 transactions, but I can't get anything for anything anymore. look on there, nothing is selling, the one Soltero with bids is at $150, which is ridiculous. Most of what is being sold on ebay now is either brand new stuff by retailers, or (too) old stuff for what I want. I'm trying CL now, maybe something will come out of that, we'll see. The last thing I sold was a dsl modem that I got $5 for. the last thing I bought was a "brand new, factory packaged" cable modem that the seller skipped out on after sending me a old beatup modem with no power supply. Fortuantely, after about a month, paypal refunded my money. Ebay ain't what it used to be. I didn't go through with the deal, I walked out. I also bought both the guitar and amp at less than retail, the amp was used, the guitar was a clearance item, so I don't feel like I'm getting ripped off for selling what I paid "new" prices for, I didn't pay new prices. That Jet City and the Lil Night Train that I was hoping to buy are too new to find used, yet, except one that he wanted a brand new price for. I was expecting 50-60% of value, I just felt like they undervalued my gear too much. I checked ebay and the nationwide GC used equipment

You are probably right, but normally how negotiations go, they lowball you, you reject, they go back to see what they can do for you, and come back with a little more. If they had come back with more than an extra $5, they probably would have had a deal

I get real tired of this stuff: "Thanks for the response.I am willing to pay your asking price.I will pay by a cashier check as its the only way i can pay you at the moment.I will make arrangement for the pickup after payment have been received by you.I don't mind adding an extra $50 so you can keep it in my favor.I would have loved to come take a look at it but i am presently out of town, send me some pictures.Reply with your name, phone # and mailing address where payment will be sent.I will let you know how i intend to pick it up.Please take the posting off craigslist today and consider it sold to me. Expecting to hear from you soon. Warm Regards. Regards." And nothing else.

I checked ebay and the nationwide GC used equipment Ugh... For the youngin's who haven't been around the block, the standard rate I've seen from pretty much every store since I was a kid is approximately 30% of street price of the item new. Which means if you bought something for $300, a store will buy it back for $100. Then they mark it up 100%. So in this example, they'd try to sell it for $200. Now of course if you have vintage piece of gear which there's a bunch of demand for the rules don't apply, but every piece of gear they buy from folks which doesn't sell takes up floor space from more desirable and/or new products which have a better chance of selling. If you don't like the offer, walk away and sell it on eBay or Craigslist. The only stuff I trade in is bigger stuff which I don't want to get killed in shipping. Everything else goes on eBay. And for the record, I've gotten exactly what I want for everything I've put on eBay as I'm realistic about the value of the things I'm selling...
