Strat Bridge Pickup: Overwound Single vs Stacked Humbucker

I've never heard a stacked humbucker that sounded good. As a result I use a Fralin Vintage Hot with the bottom plate option. You can request how hot you want them wound. Mine is not much different than a mildly hot Tele pickup (the plate gives it a very Tele-like quality), but I don't particularly like really hot pickups. YMMV.

In the past, I didn't have much time for anything other than pretty much vintage flavored strat pickups.

Doc Morbius had a set of Duncan Antiquities (Alnico IIs) with a 'Special Hot' bridge pickup wound to about 8.xK. It doesn't really sound hot at all. It just sounds a bit fuller than most strat bridge pickups.

He also has a set of the Fralin Vintage Hots and the bridge pickup has the base plate. To be honest, those two sets have two of my favorite strat bridge pickups I've ever heard, if you aren't into the overly bright/ice pick type sound.

Actually ripped the PG off and it looks like there's a hum route after all. Considering a Dimarzio Area 61 in neck/mid and a 36th PAF in the bridge, or something along those lines. Strat flavor but without the aggressive upper mids in the singles and a bit of warmth and sustain at the bridge.

I have both options among my Strats. I like them both, really. I have a Duncan JB Jr. in one, and I like it a lot. A full-sized JB isn't my favorite, but I like the Jr. Overwound singles are good, too. Not as much gain, but they make pedals for that.
