Although there are a lot of people who will tell you that SS amps and/or active pickups sound sterile, that kind of blanket statement doesn't apply to everything. I personally am not a huge fan of active pickups, but I have a couple of guitars with EMGs that I play through a variety of rigs, including SS amps. Do they work well? Well enough, assuming that combination gets me a tone I like for my style of playing. The actual guitar construction (woods, neck joint, etc.) will be a factor, and a lot of SS amps can sound very tube-like if properly EQ'd, so there are a lot of variables.
