Members Cobalt Blue
I'm considering entering the GC King of the Blues competition. However, one must use one of the amps that GC provides, and the only amps on the list that intrigue me are the Egnaters. To prepare myself for the competition, I want to feel comfortable with one of the amps that GC will provide. To that end, it means purchasing one of those amps. (Man, those GC execs are marketing geniuses, aint they? :-)) There are a couple Egnater options, one of those options being a Renegade 112. Well, even the 112 is too big and too expensive for me, but I would consider buying a Tweaker 112. Question, though: Would getting used to the controls and tones of the Tweaker 112 make for a smooth transition to the Renegade 112 for the day of the competition? (One only has five minutes to set up, so one can't be experimenting with amp knobs and switches .) Your advice humbly requested (except the advice not to enter, because I'm already fighting the side of me that's saying, "For the love of God, man, don't do it!") Members hooch1
I own the Tweaker stack but have never played the Renegade. Just checking the specs, I don't think you are going to get a feel for the Renegade with the Tweaker. Its a very different setup. I think you would be better getting one of the Rebel models. They have the tube mix feature of the Renegade. The Tweaker gets its different tones through different tone stack adjustments.
Members Marc G
I have a Tweaker now and just sold my Renegade..... IMO the Renegade's clean channel PUSHED can give you a similar Marshallesque tone if you set the tube mix all the way over to the EL34 side... it won't be exactly the same but close enough IMO... the Gain channel on the Renegade is nothing like the Tweaker IMO... Members Cobalt Blue
Good info/advice from both of you. Thank you. I really don't want to lay out the cash for a Renegade or a Rebel. Really, the Tweaker would already be pushing the amp expenditure limit for me.Here's the list of amps GC provides: Egnater Renegade Half Stack or an Egnater Renegade Combo (112 or 212) Egnater Rebel 30 or Tweaker/Rebel 20 Head + 112 Cabinet Mesa Boogie Half Stack or Peavy 6505 Half Stack or Line 6 Spider Valve Fender '65 Twin Reverb or a Hot Rode Deville 410 or a Deluxe I really don't want to own any of the above amps; and to tell you the truth, I see no reason to have amps that big to play along with a CD or mp3 in a store (except for the obvious: to get people to buy more of those amps). Maybe I will have to reconsider.
Members Marc G
The Tweaker is a KILLER little amp and you can get it to sound pretty damn good at lower volumes. What works for me is to use the 'hot' setting with gain about 8-9, 'modern' and volume to taste... from there set it on 'Brit' and adjust EQ to suit, at lower volumes I find kicking in the 'bright' switch helps clear things up. This gives a nice slightly broken up sound at low volumes... not the BEST sound the amp can give mind you... for that I find you need to put the master about 1 O'Clock gain set to 'clean' and around 9 O'Clock...this is on the 'Brit' EQ setting as well.... just a nice dynamic JUST broken up tone ready for pedals and very responsive to volume changes on your guitar and playing... oh and MORE than loud enough to play a gig with... Members Ian Egnater
The short answer is going to be, no the Tweaker doesn't really sound like the Renegade. Just a different feature set, and sound really. Maybe you can find a sound you like in the Tweaker, and use that for the competition, since it's on the list of acceptable amps for that.
