3 chord scream-tard punk bands who all copy each other. Skill isnt important as image. Play hall shows for 15 people . Crowd usually made up of friends of the band, and ages 13-16.

cookie monster screamtard "metal" bands who copy each other. Play hall shows for 15 people . Crowd Usually made up of friends of the band, and ages 13-16.

Hipster douchebag bands (who were all emo kids just a few years ago). Crowd usually made up of friends of the band, and ages 14-17.

Top 40 rock radio cover bands who play bars.

Top 40 Country radio cover bands

It pretty much sucks here.

We have, like, two local bands: an 80s cover band and a "party rock" band who play at whatever {censored}ty bar all the college kids go to get drunk and hook up with each other at. There are two or three other local bars that have shows sometimes, but I never know who's playing there because none of them have bothered to update their websites in a year or two. Oh, and a pizza joint that does a Karaoke night once in a while and charges a {censored}ing cover for it.

Your sucky scene sounds like heaven on earth in comparision.

It's really kind of silly ain't it. I guess I've been pretty busy, but it's really no excuse. We should make a point of it soon.

it is pretty silly, but i've been busy too so it's a two-way street. i would like to get together at some point soon. i'll PM you later this weekend and we can try to take it from there.

Yeah, you're right on that timing. That was just after I graduated HS and started touring, and right when all of those cool original music venues started to disappear, one by one. The New Haven scene held on a little longer, but not by much.

i remember checking out Helmet when they were on their Unsung tour with Girls v. Boys in New Britian at a venue that i just can't remember the name of. want to say it was the strand, but i don't think that's right. anyway, that place disappeared a few years afterwards which is too bad because it was so cool.

how far are you from louisville? tons of sweet bands out of there!

Im roughly 3-4 hours from Louisville..dependding on traffic, and what day of the week / time of day it is. Last time I was in Louisville was in '01 @ a PanterA show (one of the last ones I believe).

There was a local band that was one of the openers. I cant recall their name but I thought they were cool.

Around here, my choices are Nashville, St Louis, Memphis, Carbondale Il, or Louisville. Once in a blue moon they'll have a decent out of town band here, but I dont care to have to sit thru punk bands to have to hear a decent one. Never know what order the bands will play in. We have a few cool bands here actually, but they hardly play any shows . Usually when a cool group starts, it doesnt last long.

Houston's not dead in the music scene, but its a little to scatter-brained. There's not one ruling genre. Most bands here are metal or cover acts, but there's so many other styles and genres, so there's no real cohesive "scene". The diversity actually hinders the scene around here and causes it to be very "clicky". The is especially evident in club booking. It also makes it fairly difficult to find other musicians you can identify with and start a band. Its all over the place too much.

There is a big cow punk/rockabilly scene picking up, but those bands are still far outnumbered by metal and hardcore acts. Another thing picking up like crazy around here is tribute acts. I can tolerate cover bands, but damn, I consider tribute acts to be the bottom of the live music barrel.

Williamsburg, VA. A lot better than my hometown. I work at a little coffee shop that sees touring bands of many different styles every weekend or two. We've got plenty of on-campus bands as well. It's pretty nice considering how lame the town is otherwise.

Our campus radio station also got funding to become a record label. I'm really excited for that.

one of my best friends lives in Williamsburg but he only knows of a few bars, (green leaf IIRC?) which don't often have bands. but then again he's not exactly the type who goes out often. I'm heading down there to visit in a few months, are there any places you'd recommend for live music?

Its actually pretty good here. Lots of live music venues, including a block in the downtown core where theres about 7 bars that always have top notch cover bands, and 3 or 4 that bring in some good original acts. On the other sside of town theres some GREAT venues for live music, and there's two arenas for big acts which we sometimes get if they decide to stop here between toronto and montreal. As a cover band guy, great pay, lots of good bars, friendly competition w/o underbidding for bars

Played what's suppose to be an open mike last night at a little neighborhood pub that has a stage & decent PA.
The place was deserted all night long, except for the bartender & a couple of local alchoholics at the bar.
It was great...a 5 hour jam with no worries about being too loud for the neighbors/wife/etc! :)

Lots of bands ready to play for free or to pay to play (rent the room and handle everything) on week nights.

Weekends are the domain of the douchebag generation.

You can forget about making decent money unless you can pack a room and sell merch.
