What's the state of the music scene in your area?

I'm curious as to what's going on in the rest of the world, or if you live near me, then you're perception of our local scene. What kind of music does well in your area? Is it mainly cover bands? Metal? Blues? Are there all-ages clubs for the kids to go to? Have the clubs given up on live music in favor of karoake and DJ's?

Lots of cover bands in the area here, and every one of them are so cut throat to each other that they even take a lower cut in the pay from the bar just to get in the door, which in the end {censored}s it up major for any decent band around here trying to get a deserving pay rate.

smallish new mexico town. used to have 2 great small venues with local shows every friday. both shutdown now. so the bands seemed to die with them. big bands that play warped tour are starting to come through town but that's it in the way of shows. i really miss this time last year when there were still lots of local shows

Lots of cover bands of all varieties. Rocked-up pop does well in many places, and there are plenty of bars that have classic rock and modern rock. There are a few places that have jazz, jazz fusion, and latin jazz. Original gigs are more difficult to find, but not impossible. My main band has only been together since January, and we've played five or six original-music gigs so far. We've rehearsed a few set of cover music to try to earn some money, but it's harder to break on to that scene. Oh, I'm in South Florida. You'll find everything in Miami from ultra-hipster alternative stuff to rap. It's not the best place in the world, but it certainly isn't the worst.

we used to have a sweet local venue that got some pretty good, nationally touring acts. it was an old church; they had a smaller stage downstairs and pretty large stage upstairs and each had a great soundsystem. but alas like most things it did not last, it went out of business and so went most of our good local music. i live in a college town too, 43k kids at least but all anyone wants these days is hip hop and electronic. not bashing either of those types of music, i actually like both, but i know that when i was in school all i wanted to do was see good live music.

Metal is very big. (Ok, it's Alice Cooper's home town.)

Country is very big.

Some Classic Rock/Oldies at the casinos.

No Blues that I can find.

Jazz occasionally.

Lots of Mexican music. Great if you dig accordions.

Very little Urban or R&B.

Williamsburg, VA. A lot better than my hometown. I work at a little coffee shop that sees touring bands of many different styles every weekend or two. We've got plenty of on-campus bands as well. It's pretty nice considering how lame the town is otherwise.

Our campus radio station also got funding to become a record label. I'm really excited for that.

I'd take scenester douchebags over dad-rock cover bands any day.

Me too.

The scene here in CT has always been really weird. We have the advantage of being conveniently located between NYC and Boston, and get a lot of bands stopping off halfway, but we also lose a lot of good bands that move to the city to "get discovered", or just to be able to play regularly. In the 90's, the scene was a lot better, with a ton of decent venues, great bands that supported each other, even across genres. It felt good to be a part of it. Then the 2000's ushered in this wave of cover and tribute bands. Not even good ones, but ones that just played all power chords with full gain, no matter what song. These days, I feel like people are really trying to create a healthy scene again, but it's a real struggle. Being in the business, I'm pretty good friends with some of the all-ages venue owners, and it's really a labor of love for them.

Beats me. I'm under the radar. I play weird bleeping droning ambient waves on a guitar thru tons of signal processing gear for new age events, bookstores, healing centers, sci-fi conventions, whoever will have me.

Haven't sought out a conventional rock gig in quite some time. Maybe I should.
