Tele that's not a tele - am I missing anything.

Hi guys.

I'm one of those who wants it all in one instrument - for practical reasons at gigs. but I've realised this is impossible. so I want as much as I can get. Over the years I've realised what's important to me is:

25.5 scale

silent pups (including humbuckers)

good cleans, powerful classic rock leads and hendrixish rhythms - they're all pretty vague terms. but I don't find any of the stock classic designs do what I want.

I've sort of narrowed this down to a tele type design - they cut through and never really fail - great design. but with different pickup config.

...I currently use a 90s Fat tele (5 way switching) with a lil59 in the bridge. It pretty much does what I need but I hardly use the neck humbuck on it's own - just tapped in parrallel with the bridge. - pretty much using just 2 of five positions, seems a waste.

I've thought a lot about P-90 guitars, but don't want hum. I don't think I want a 24.75" scale either.

options as I see em:

Jim Adkins - hum issue

humbucker tele with switching options - pretty much what I've got.

some sort of stacked single coil sized pups in stock tele

fat tele with Fralin 92 in the neck - anyone done this?

....Am I missing anything obvious? thanks.

I would stick with the Tele you have since you love the 'lil '59 in the bridge, but I would start trying different humbucker options in the neck position. I would actually try a Duncan SM-2N mini humbucker - the one with four leads so you can split the coils. It's hotter than the SM-1N so it should pair well with the lil '59, plus you get a great neck pickup tone on its own.

Another good option might be a Ducan P-Rails with all the switching options.

I actually had both of those pickups in the same guitar at one point. It was the most versatile tone machine I've ever had. I should have kept it. :D

Good place to start. I have an SM3 paired with a Seth Lover and it's a killer combination.

You could always do what I did.

If you can add it to your guitar, how about a noiseless Strat-type single coil in the middle? This can give you the quack sound, if you also have a noiseless single in the neck slot. This is kind of like a Nashville Tele setup.

You could also give consideration to using a GFS Fatbody neck pickup. part Tele, part Strat, part P90 vibe, about the best Tele neck pickup you can have

Frets has a lot of clips here with a Tele I built him with a fatbody at the neck

I have a SM-3N mini humbucker in my Tele and love it, SM-3N has a little more more clarity and detail than the SM-2 and it has the four-conductor hookup cable.

Off-topic...that is still one of the best looking guitars i've seen on this site. So much
