Might as well get this thread going... This build will be kicking off very soon. In fact the inlay work might start this weekend...

Here's my first build (still underway, but getting there) where i decided to practice with cedar and aspen (home depot exotic woods, lol) so i could gain some skill before touching mahogany and maple...

The Plan:

Mahogany Neck 24.75" (blank purchased from Grizzly)

Maple Top (pre-carved flame top purchased from Eastern Maple Carved Tops)

Ebony Fretboard (Stewmac)

Custom Style Inlays (Stewmac)

Holly Headstock Veneer (Eastern Maple Carved Tops)

Bone Nut

Not sure on hardware or pickups yet...

Total estimated build cost (the carved top was very expensive): $850

while waiting on my truss rod to arrive for my practice build i decided to do a little inlay work...

inlays numbered and laid out on the ebony board

dcam4994.jpg

shaved the back of the board down until it was about 3/16" thick. i collected the sawdust to use to make filler later.

dcam4995.jpg

taped up and ready to go

dcam4996.jpg

i centered the inlay and drew an outline of it.

dcam4997.jpg

next i used a razor blade to score the board and cut away the tape.

dcam4998.jpg

aligned a straight edge to help the dremel cut clean and straight...

1st inlay slot cut...

the ebony hides the imperfections better than rosewood???

the inlays are done, adding some filler here shortly...

more pics upcoming...

well, ebony is black. make black filler, and you arent going to see much unless you look really close. with rosewood the grain makes it easier to see filler.
