Members kenm
Hi All, I've been using Vic Firth wood tip 5As only for about 2 years now. I think it is a good stick, but I find I crack the tips pretty regularly and that my hand seems to want to hold the stick past the end. So I think it is time to try a new stick. I want something longer and perhaps a different brand. Can anyone suggest anything? I don't think I want to try a synthetic quite yet. Thanks,Ken
Members relva
I used 5A's from Vic Firth as well and had the same deal-I wanted more reach. I found the Extreme 5A, which, aside from the gay name, is exactly the same as a normal 5A except a tad longer. I know if you go to the Vicky Firth site you can compare sticks and tell it if you want longer/shorter. (as well as other details like thicker/thinner)
Members steamyz
I dont know how the hell you crack a 5A....i play with 5B's and hardly EVER crack it unless it's a wood tipp...then the tip goes south after a bit. But i know a guy that breaks a set EVERY time he plays. My opinion...look at your technique....you should not be cracking sticks that often....you must be one hell of a banger! First of all 5A's are thinner than 5B's. They would be easier to break depending on the way you play. Second of all he said he cracks the tips. Not the stick. That is understandable and could mean he is using the wrong stick. If hes holding it way far down he should go wiht a longer stick. I prefer the vic firth companys sticks and you should be able to find what you want there. Hope this helps.
Members kenm
Hey All, Thanks for the replies. I went and picked up a couple of pairs of Vic Firth 5A Extreme which was great to play with last night. the VF website said they were an inch longer than the regular 5A, but when I put the two sticks side by side, it really only seemed like 1/2 and inch. It really made a difference though. I suggest everyone double check that the sticks they are using are the right ones for them. Oh, I rarely break a stick, but the wood tips seem to much too soon. Picture the perfectly round tip with a side missing. That's what usually happens. Ken
Members Chabo
ken- have you tried nylon tips?
Members kenm
Actually, I haven't played a nylon tip stick in a long time. I was going to try a pair, but the 5A Extreme doesn't come in a nylon tip. Oh well. Ken
Members Boone 5
if you get nylon tips dont get vic firth cause they fly off, get 5a American Hickory (i think) pro mark, with the Nylon, best nylon tip ive ever played.
Members Dim_Sim
yeahi have that problem with vicfirth teardrop wood tips... they're pretty shockin for me!! i wonder maybe if its got anything to do with the texture of my ride cymbal? (Paiste Innovations 20" Medium Ride) i switched to SD2s prodominantley at the start of this year and never had a broken tip so maybe its just the shape combined with the way i strike? i know i dont have bad technique.. its not the best but my teacher says i've improved marginally since starting lessons again at the start of last year
Members Chabo
I've never lost a Vic Firth tip, I've only lost Pro-mark tips, but I seem to be in the minority. Just buy a bunch of different types of sticks at a store, and use each pair for a day or two, and see what you like.

Members john clarity
never had a problem either with vic firth nylon tips flying off, sounds kind of dramatic!!!all fun and games till someone loses an eye...i'm currently using 7dn (i think)i used to use 5a then switched to 8dn for a bit.i found after a while 5a's felt incredibly unwieldy and slow to play with so i stuck with lighter sticks, just moving up to 7s for a bit more weight.i've had no problems with them since, and have only broken one stick in the past year. It's pretty easy to crack sticks... I have played with 2b's and I crack those about 1-4 sticks at 1 h gig... That's not hard... Just hit hard as you can rim shots... and beat the {censored} out frmo your cymbals... If you do it right you make your sticks crack pretty fast.. And actually I really do it little time ago but then i saw how much i have to put money to cymbals and sticks and heads so I really had start to hit little pit lighter.. Now I have change my sticks to 5b, and I hit cymbals little pit lighter but still I really enjoy hit my snare hard with rimshots... And my sticks don't like it.... God knows why...?!??!!?
