Rock what rock? Like grunge/hardrock? Use BIG drums. Example: 24" bass drum, 12 or 14" mounted tom and 16" floor tom. At least this is affordable.

I play rock music, some of it pretty heavy, and I use a 10, 12, 13, 16 setup. Some people are pretty stuck on the powertoms for harder rock, but theres no rule that says you cant use smaller toms. Experement, and see which would sound better in the type of songs you're playing.

I agree with Newman. I used to use all power toms but have found that smaller toms have a wider tuning range than larger toms. You can get a small tom to sound good at a low tuning but large toms generally don't sound good with a high tuning.

With all the drumhead options available on the market you can get the sound you are looking for by experimenting with different head combinations/tuning, etc.

I play all kinds of music, but I've started a band and our intention is to play music in the same genre as Tool.

I'm saving up for a kit with either a 22" or 24" kick and 8", 10", 14" and 16" toms, with probably an additional 12".

Stephen Perkins uses short stack toms and few rock harder than he. Of course it's always miked...

He does use a 24x18 bass though
