I use a clear ambassador with no hole. The drum has minimal dampening, only a quarter of a towel touching the front head.

Sound? Boomy but controlled, doesn't have a lot of sustain. Good lows though. With resonant head crancked really tight gets a somewhat clicky sound.

I'm beginnig to dislike the powerstroke 3 more and more. It's too top40-ish, too controlled, too.. I dunno how to say it. But I want my pistripe back, it had truckloads of low boom that sustained for a week.. But maybe it's just the vintage bearing edges on my bass. My other bass that has modern edges sounds crappy with a pinstripe and nice with a powerstroke. It has similar reso head config.

I use a Remo coated ambassador with a 6" hole in as resonant head and a small pillow for dampening. Batter head loose resonant head pretty tight............achieves a clicky sound.

I use the Remo Powerstroke3 Ebony resonant on my 20" ... it's not quite as muffled as using a blanket, etc., and allows the head to resonate a bit more - I like it. On my 22" kick, it came with the clear P3 batter and a Remo smooth white logo head (w/felt strip) for the resonant ... very nice.

I currently have a Pinstripe on my bass and I don't like it all, I've been wanting to get a new head for it, I was thinking about an EMAD, EQ3, Superkick II, or a Power Stroke 3, and I think I am going to go with the Power Stroke 3. Hopefully it'll sound alot better than that crappy Pinstripe!!

I use the powerstroke 3 for the batter head and use a coated ambassador with a port hole located at about 4:00 on the drum (lower right hand side) for the front head. I use a Tonerite foam pad to control the sound. It's tight, punchy and allows the drum to breathe just a bit. I find that pillows dampen the drum too much for my taste. Head tensioning on the batter head is medium and the batter head is loose/medium. The coated ambassador is warmer with less overtones and the clear or ebony ambassador would give you more definition, high end and more sustain since they're not constructed with any coating or tone control rings etc.

I use the Clear PowerStrokeIII on my 22" Slingerland drum.. and a REMO FiberSkyn3 on the front,,,,a beater patch, wooden beater head, no hole,,, no padding inside...tuned very low,,, it give a deep, long sustaining, room filling rumble with a pretty articulate smack from the beater.....

WorshipMetallica, By cutting the inner ply from your pinstripe head ,you will have a powerstroke 3, just leave about a 2" strip of the inside ply.........My pinstripe sounded like crap too...not any more..

hey I never thought of that, to just cut one of the plies off and leave the 2 inch ring. But how do you cut it and only get one ply without getting them both? I suppose if I mess it up, I could always just go out and buy a Poer Stroke 3...

I laid it face down on a table, then I drew a line 2" from the edge, then I used a piece of tape to lift the inner ply from the outer ply. While still pulling up on the tape,I make a cut on the line I drew. Now I remove the tape, and carefully lift the ply with my fingers. And slowly continue cutting the line...take your time.

a little long winded....I know, but this is how I did it.

i use a Powerstroke 3 with the included falam pad. My resonant used to be an ebony 8" hole, great sound with no muffling... switched to an Emperor coated head, and what a boomy sound! this was my previous bass head, had nothing else... a pillow does the trick, and the Bd is still pretty boomy but with a LOT less resonance...

I did this once. It worked nice on the reso side, but was not like the real thing. Reason? The plies used in pinstripe heads are thinner than those in single ply heads. Result? wimpier, less bassy sound. And it's not going to last on the batter side, even with a patch.

go with the emad - i just bought one and removed my powerstroke 3 - the powerstroke 3 was too boomy and open without a pillow and then too quiet and dead with a pillow - so i put the emad on and removed the pillow - lots of punch with a controlled sustain - very happy
