Members Dave Schenck
Ride: This cymbal is, on average, 20"or bigger. It is usually a thick cymbal and is used primarily as a time keeping aide. Crash : A cymbal generally of 14"s up to 20"s used for accenting certain parts of the music. Splash : Like a small crash with a similar function. These are the bare bones descriptions of each cymbal. I hope it was helpful. Another way of thinking of it is, A ride goes "ding" , A crash crashes and a splash splashes.

Members WorshipMetallica
yeah, basically what he said. The ride is used for the same reason as the hi-hat. it sounds like a "ding" or a "ping". Crashes are used at the beginning of a beat usually. Crashes get used a whole lot. The splash cymbal isn't used hardly ever, depending on what you listen to. It sounds like a higher pitched Crash, actually, basically it is a crash except half the size. If you have only have hihats and an extra boom stand, then definately get a CRASH. It plays a very important role. You don't need a ride because you already have a time-keeping cymbal (hihats). Rides just offer an alternative to using the hihat, and splashes in a way offer an alternative to crashes. Oh yeah, then there's China cymbals, don't worry about those for now though. GET A CRASH Sabian, Zildjian, or Paiste (In other words, don't by a no-name cymbal)
Members stapes2260
may i suggest going to a music store and reading the labels on cymbals, hitting them, and then realizing what they are for.
