Well, I don't know if any of you have seen it or not, but Led Zeppelin has released a DVD simply called "Led Zeppelin".

My brother bought it for me. over 5 hours of Zeppelin.

I have one thing to say.

John Bonham was a complete freak of nature.

Jesus Christ was he amazing. There is an entire concert from 1970, and Bonham does the most incrdible stuff I've ever seen done on a drumset.

I'll be able to set my kit back up and play again after the 1st of July, and I think I'm going to have to revisit the land of Bonzo.

I take back anything I've ever said otherwise about Bonham....I had strayed from Zeppelin for awhile.

Bonham is the king of all rock drummers.

Now, I wonder if I can start a Led Zeppelin Tribute band? I just need to find Jones, Plant, & Page look alikes.

(I don't know if I've put up any pictures of me...I tend not to...but I can easily pass for Bonham....And all these years it never dawned on my why I wore a Burnsides styled mustache!

yeah i have the DVD as well. I couldn't believe bonham either, just completely awesome. His solo on moby dick is sickening, not to mention when they are jamming out, especially on the first disc, which was after releasing Led Zep II (my fav album of all time). If you haven't checked out the dvd i suggest you do, it will blow your mind.

That's it.

Moby Dick during the Royal Albert Hall is freaking amazing..actually, everything on that section is...a lot of it is faster than on the Albums, and man...Bonham just freaking shreds on all of it...the whole band is bad ass, and John Paul Jones has got to be the most underrated bass player ever.

I had forgotten why I loved Led Zeppelin so much, and this DVD put me back on course.

By far that DVD is the baddest thing to own this year-a true rocker could never pass that one up

Very well said and i wholeheartedly agree!

I am a guitar player. I would like to know from a drummer's perspective why you guys think Bonham is the greatest. What is it that really sets him apart from the rest? I'm not that crazy about long drum solos so i usually skip over Mody Dick. I'm not arguing that he isn't and I'm not trying to be a wise ass. I would really like to know what impresses a drummer when he watches other drummers and why Bohnam is go highly revered. As for myself i really like the funky parts he plays......like in the "The Hunter" part of the "How Many More Times" jam when page is singing "Steal away........Little Robert Anthony wants to come and play." :p

Yeah, I saw CD 1 of that DVD at a friend's house the other day. It's asskickin! I've been a Bonham fan since I started and learned some of my basic techniques by listening to him. Later I could actually see how he did it: the Danish television outtake and the Supershow version of Dazed and Confused (as featured on CD1 on the DVD) have been broadcasted on MTV on numerous occasions. And there of course is The song remains the same.

As far as the DVD is concerned, the Royal Albert Hall gig is great but I think Bonham is best on the black and white Danish recordings. The sound of the recording is really good and Bonham goes completely berserk during some of his drumfills (Dazed and Confused!!!!). I love seeing him do that :)

But the track I really like on that DVD is the Supershow version of Dazed and Confused. The sound is really crappy and you can't hear that well what Bonham's doing. However, ROBERT PLANT'S VOCALS ON THAT RECORDING RULE!!!

Gotta see CD 2 soon :)

Hi etvetv2001,

I'm not sure that I can pinpoint it exactly but I'll give you a few reasons why I personally am a Bonham fan.

#1. I think his drumlicks and fills were by far the best of any rock drummer - EVER.

#2. I like the Feel. Did Bonham have perfect Timing? I don't know, and I don't care, but the FEEL/GROOVE whatever you want to call it is just awesome.

#3. The Sound of his drumkit. I still prefer the sound of Bonham's drumkit to anything else I've heard out there...

How much do I love that sound?

Well how about this.

If you watched the first DVD, then you will recognize where I got the idea to build this.

The Kit that Bonmham used in that concert was a Double bass kit....but The other guys stole his second bassdrum because they said he just went off on these double bass tangents that riuned the songs.... I, on the other hand - donm't have Bonzo's right foot - so I have to use the double bass setup...I hate doublepedals and have not found one yet that feels EXACTLY like 2 kick drums, and I use Axis pedals.

Carmine Appice had gotten Bonzo an endorsement with Ludwig.

In 1997, I built this kit as a replica of Bonzo's first endorsement kit, and it sounds just like it.

(an interesting side note is that Paul Thompson from Roxy Music and later Concrete Blonde, now owns the original Bonzo endorsement kit-which not only had the 18" and 20" Floor toms, it also had a custom made 22" Floor tom.

It's not about the solos, I love his playing but I get bored with the MD solo about .5 seconds into it =)

It's all about the feel, he had an ability to play behind the beat and make every note count. Having played guitar as well as drums I can liken his playing to David Gilmours solos, while not technically dazzeling they always fit the music and are full of "just the right sound". It's the sum of all the parts.

Also I always liked his ability to know when *not* to play and beat displacement, i.e. tasteful, broken up licks instead of the standard "bada bada bada bada CRASH fill (yawn) Not to mention his amazing foot work, being able to "feather" the base pedal and even ghost with it. Have a listen to "Good times, Bad times" or one of my favorite Bonham grooves, "Fool in the Rain".

Nobody could make a kit sound as thick and heavy as Bonzo

:D
