Kick/head/beater question

I have a coated Powerstroke 3 head with falam patch on a Pearl Export series kick. The beater is a normal looking old round felt jobby. (OK, I'm not really a drummer) I seem to be lacking attack even with the head tightened quite a bit. I also have the front head off all together. I was thinking of trying one of two things.

- taking of the falam patch and trying a different (harder) beater.

or

- trying a clear Pinstripe head.

Any thoughts on this? Is there that much difference in the heads?

I want to have a good attack but still plenty of thud.

Thanks !

I had a Pearl Export for 10 years and I tried the Remo PS-3 and I hated that head on the bass drum but the Aquarian Super Kick II

sounded awesome on the BD. Definitely take the patch off I use square patch of electrical tape and you might want to try a plastic or wood beater. You said you wanted more attack and thud, by putting the front head back on you can control the sustain and the batter will control the attack.

If you want alot of attack on a coated head, the first thing you need to do is ditch that felt beater for a wood beater. You will never get a sharp crack with felt.

The beater patch you have is fine, just change the beater. If you use any beater other then felt, you MUST use a contact patch or you will be trashing your head in no time. Wood and plastic beaters create heat on impact that will rupture the head.

Well, my recording partner went ahead and bought some heads today. For kick he picked up an Aquarian Force I. I'll be putting that on as well as a new 2 way DW plastic/felt beater. Hopefully we get the desired results. The goal is to get what we want at the source instead of having to add/subtract too much on the board EQ wise.

Thanks for the replies. :)

hey just reading through the posts about the kick drum questions you posted.. i have a remo pinstripe on my kit,and use a dw double pedal. i had used a heavier head patch before , but on my pinstripe i went for an evans eq patch (that's what it's called) they make them in the single and double mallet width sizes. it's a little thicker than a normal sticker, but seems to be very durable without choking out the sound, and attack of the kick .. just figured you may want to check one out if you still need the kick action, and sound produced

For me, the Remo PowerStroke3 with the supplied flam patch and a wood beater has always sounded good,, with any tunings,,,

Getting some good results now with the items I mentioned before. Tuned to taste (bought a Drum Dial) and it's sounding great in the room and to tape as well. Flat EQ other than pulling out the low mids and it's right there. :D Thanks again for the replies.
