I aquired a nice 14x16 suspended tom to add to my kit. Its an ugly green stain with a clear over it. I would like to refinish it to match my kit. What would be the best way to go about this. Since its stained and I would like to refinsh in a red wine stain to match my kit ....will it be impossible to get rid of the green? Any help would be appreciated.

Well I figured that much. I was just wondering if the stain would have penetrated the shell to much to make it worth doing.

The stains used by most drum manufacturers is water based.(the stain penetrates, then the water evaporates, leaving the outside of the shell dyed, then the clear coats are added.) BUT sometimes, the clear "stain" is actually a tinted color that is applied after a clear coat or two have been put on, so that the color is embedded between layers of clear. (similar to how a "sunburst" finish is made.)

I would say that yes, you could sand down enough to get rid of the stain, but if you have the money, it may be cheaper to get a piece of veneer, and apply it to the outside of the shell.

Instead of spending all your time trying to sand all of that off, I would use a chemical stripper myself, something like Strip-Eze would work, just make sure you use it in an area with good airflow.(i.e., outside - those fumes can do a number on you!)
