Members toysryou Posted January 4, 2007 Members Posted January 4, 2007 Hi folks, i'd like a professional looking website as a showcase for my music. Is it wise to attempt this, i have no experience, should i hire someone or go for a ready made site? This is going to be a surprise for my band, want to prove i can do things outside of the band, some solo projects. Questions How difficult is building a website, costs for building and then running it and what software do you recommend? Recommend me an entire list if you want, pro's and con's, any advice appreciated.
Members zookie Posted January 4, 2007 Members Posted January 4, 2007 It is possible, with patience and time. No matter which frontend GUI you use to build web pages, you will ultimately need to understand something about HTML, FTP, webhosting and other groovy web tricks, like using Java, stylesheets, etc. What you'll need is: *Some idea of what you want a web site to do. This is really the fun part. Scour the web looking at band websites to get ideas of how many pages to include, what type of information to include, etc. *Find an application to help you build the web pages. Whether you use Notepad, Dreamweaver or Microsoft FrontPage is your decision. Be warned that FrontPage tends to load a ton of Microsoft proprietary code and organizes pages in a way that is not compatible with all web hosting sites. *Find a webhost. Once you're done building your pages, you'll need a place to store the pages so that they're accessible on the web. There are plenty of companies that have this service. Very few are free. If you plan on adding a lot of graphics and/or music samples, you'll want something with more harddrive and bandwidth. That will cost you. *You'll want to create a domain name with your band name. That way you can have a groovy www..com URL. If none of this makes sense and doesn't sound like fun, then I'd think about getting someone to do all this for you. You can always go with a free myspace account. That takes minimal HTML know-how.

Members Scafeets Posted January 9, 2007 Members Posted January 9, 2007 I started pretty much from scratch and built a bunch of sites using 1&1 hosting and the free software they supplied. The WYSIWYG editor they give you is Netfusion, which works like a charm. If you can find your way around Microsoft Office, you can build a web page. I built these: www.ALsoKnown.com www.PlumKrazys.com www.CampCarefree.org I've been a 1&1 customer for three years now, and their hosting and customer service has been great. www.1and1.com
Members groovetube66 Posted January 9, 2007 Members Posted January 9, 2007 I think your best bet is to use a free content management system like Joomla, or a blog system like Nucleus CMS... or, buy a copy of Jamroom http://www.jamroom.net/
Members metaorphic Posted January 11, 2007 Members Posted January 11, 2007 I also have some experience with this. I bought a domain name and signed up for a webhosting server, using Microsoft Word(!) to start. Eventually I learned enough of Dreamweaver 4 to build a decent site. You can check it out at www.metaorphic.com. I'm always considering somehow making it fancier so it looks more professional, but as of now it looks nice and does the job. The flash player code was free, and besides playing your songs and showing an image at the same time, you can stream video too. You might be able to use the latest website development software in your school if you go to one, or even a library but that's a guess. It's definitely a fun and a great way to get your music heard by people around the country or around the world!
