Members Dr. Tweedbucket Posted December 28, 2003 Members Posted December 28, 2003 YEah !! This is a GREAT idea !! .....the amp guys won't like this too much, but here is how it is going to work ..... 1. Rush out and round up all the NOS RCA, Mullard, Tung-sol ect... vacuum tubes. Vintage tubes will work the best 2. Build a small vaccum tube amplifier and mount it inside EACH drum head. Velcro a microphone in there somewhere so that it is pointing up towards the drum head. 3. Remove the bottom resonator head and mount a speaker in there ....make sure it is pointing outward and hooked up to the out put of the amp 4. Drill a few holes in the side of the drum shells to let the heat out. Drill two extra holes to mount volume and tone knobs, so you can customize the tone of each head 5. Yeah, baby ....now plug all your drums in and KNOCK EM DEAD !! You will have the smoothest, warmest tone that the drum world has EVER heard !! Your sloppy playing won't really even matter anymore because the tone will be so BIG ....that it will cover you
Members humble_pie Posted December 28, 2003 Members Posted December 28, 2003 Much warmer than those digital drum heads.
Members Adan_V Posted December 28, 2003 Members Posted December 28, 2003 .......................how much have you had to drink?..........................
Members anacrime Posted December 28, 2003 Members Posted December 28, 2003 I'm a total tech-head so any wacky inventions always interest me.....so you got any pics of your invention?
Members TheBoatCanDream Posted December 28, 2003 Members Posted December 28, 2003 Warmth comes from resonance between the two heads. It will sound like crap with only the top head. If you want a warm sound, go out and buy Remo Fyberskins.
Members Riffle Posted December 28, 2003 Members Posted December 28, 2003 We're just never happy with our sounds eh? I like to explore, and you might just be on a great idea! I want others to think about this.. might be a new idea worth doing.. . .
Members Dr. Tweedbucket Posted February 25, 2004 Author Members Posted February 25, 2004 I have a proto-type done, but trying to find a place to mount all the transformers.......... .... also, I am thinking of trying KT88s instead of 12AX7s ....... they may add a little more punch .....
Members steamyz Posted February 25, 2004 Members Posted February 25, 2004 Dude you are wacked out of your {censored}ing mind!
Members rumblebelly Posted February 25, 2004 Members Posted February 25, 2004 Sounds like a fire hazard. Better have a fire extinguisher handy.
Members iplayloudly Posted February 26, 2004 Members Posted February 26, 2004 the vibration from hitting the drums would break the tubes
Members FlamTap Posted February 26, 2004 Members Posted February 26, 2004 So, do you take a tom and hold it in front of the amp to get that guitar-like feedback while you play?
Members TheBoatCanDream Posted February 26, 2004 Members Posted February 26, 2004 I still think it's going to sound crappy. Tubes sound great because they stress the good parts of what's aleady there in the sound of the guitar. You still have to deal with your original sound before anything else.
Members Old Steve Posted February 26, 2004 Members Posted February 26, 2004 Why not just take a bunch of vacum tubes, put them in a cloth sack, and smash it with a hammer....in front of a mic, of course. It could give you a cool 'white noise' accent somewhere between a splash cymbal and a pane of glass breaking.

Members slickrick1688 Posted June 4, 2006 Members Posted June 4, 2006 You could also just save yourself time and money and buy and e kit with an amp. It'.ll sound a lot better too.
Members the DW Posted June 4, 2006 Members Posted June 4, 2006 You guys have it all wrong. This is the proper tool to make your drums sound warmer: Just pour some lighter fluid on your kit, fire up this bad boy and you'll have the warmest sounding drums in the entire world... ....until they turn to ash.

Members Dave Schenck Posted June 5, 2006 Members Posted June 5, 2006 Dude I just want to say, sorry no one got it.
Members the DW Posted June 5, 2006 Members Posted June 5, 2006 Originally posted by Dark Ice Would make a change from maple and birch!!! The drums would start out like birch, turn to maple, then finally mahogony before getting that crunchy, carbon fiber sound. Of course, if it's a wrapped finish, you'll probably get some hallecenogenic effect from the toxic fumes produced by the wrap as it burns! Bonus!!
