Members chops
what BPM can you all do paradiddles to? what speed would be considered pretty good? i just did 190bpm, and was pretty stoked it felt good
Members ShishKaboom!
do you mean one group of LRLL etc for each beat ie, 760 stick hits per minute?
Members dogxray
Yes thats right Shish. Thats top speed for me as well. But this discussion has come up before. To really know what speed you can do any rudiment at you must play it consistently for 1 minute. One blast for 10 or 20 seconds does not mean you can play them at that speed. To be fair you have to hold it steady no waivering for a full minute to really make it count.
Members ShishKaboom!
Ive never tried playing paradiddles like that as a nOOb of almost 9 weeks playing I usually concentrate on correct technique and playing them crisp and clean rather than speed. However this thread made me curious so I turned my 'nome on,I can play paradiddles cleanly at 120bpm?Kinda slow by your standards I guess.
Members dogxray
9 weeks of playing 120 bpm? Thats great!! But in all fairness where in the hell are you going to be playing paraddidles at 190 bpm in any song? But speed has always been a part of drumming. Nice clean even sounding strokes is the name of the game. Don't forget to work on your double strokes as well. Good clean execution will set you apart from the crowd. Members dogxray
oh yeah I hear ya chops. that was not meant as a put down. I do the speed endurance thing as well. Your right it's for your own personal goals which good to have. I am working on flams played on the 1 in 5 and 7 stroke rolls alternating and gradualy speeding up. That's really the point...it's not just how fast you can go for a short period, but it's also important to see how well you can sustain it. If you're looking to measure yourself against other drummers, use caution. Go check out the world's fastest drummer competition and you'll see guys that are out of control, speed-wise. They could probably do 190bpm paradiddles with 40 pound sticks underwater in a full body cast. The point is, if you're able to quantify your improvement (hitting 190 for the first time) that's a great motivational method. Now work to hit 200. I do the same thing in other areas. I started running about a year ago. My latest goal was to be able to run 4 miles in 32 minutes (8 minute miles). I hit that number last week, and while it'll never get me into the olympics, I've revised the goal to do 5 miles in 40 minutes (every time I get to the 8 minute/mile theshold, I up the mileage). Anyway, goal setting is great. Keep with it.

Members JSimms
I am at work and don't have a metronome here, but I timed it with my watch and using my hands on my desk I can do paradiddles @ about 174 bpm give or take.

Members rumblebelly
They sound fine to me. There's two different paradiddle exercises with the different speeds to listen to. One is straight paradiddles and the other has a rest.

I was listening to the straight ones at slower speeds and for some short stretches they did not sound "locked in" to me, no pocket (if a rudiment can have a pocket?? ) It wasn't like I was listening for "mistakes" in them either, I was just checking them out and at a few spots I went, "huh?, that didn't sound right??", and then it would happen again. I'll check it out again and take note of where I'm hearing it.
