different/electronic drum sounds live

I am not a drummer but I was wondering what are the ways you could go about using different sounds live for different songs

like in one song the kit might be more electronic sounding and then another song a regular acoustic kit might be fine

I don't really like the idea of just a electronic kit with just pads so are triggers the only other option? (and if its something like v-drums nobody could afford them where I live anyway) :)

anybody have any experience with this kind of thing?

Because of that stipulation, I didn't really feel qualified to advise, but I have seen an option or two short of a full E-kit.

There are 'multi-pad' units that allow you to have several different sounds at your disposal- some have built in samples, others need to be connected to a module or sound-source thru midi.

Roland percussion controllers/multipads

Hart multipad

no doubt you've seen drummers using these in conjunction with their acoustic kit. This guy does a pretty good job:

I think they've got video from their DVD on the site, should give an idea of how they do it.

It gives you access to whatever sounds you might want to add to the kit. I've got the Hart multipad but never really worked it into my kit, I prefer to hit something that responds/feels more like a drum or cymbal. That's why I use a full E-kit, but that doesn't work for most people I guess.

Otherwise, you would probably need to go the trigger route. But then you'd need a module or sampler too.

I assume you're talking about being able to switch drum sounds during a gig? There are other options if you're wanting it for recording.
