Members DirtyBird
Look I'm a guitarist, adn I know NOTHING about drum tone. I can only imagine you guys are just as anal about drum tone as we are about our tone but I have no idea what good and bad drum tone is. (Except for Lars' snare on St Anger, that's pretty bad... IMO at least...) But here's the deal. I want to start a metal band and I'm either going to buy a kit or get a friend of mine to buy himself a kit. I'm very, VERY likely going to do the latter and this is definitely more long-term than anything immediate. I'm hoping within 6 months... but you never know. But drummers are so hard to find and this guy sounds like he *might* suffice. He scares me how much he seems to, IMO, use double bass as a crutch. But hell I'm playing metal and it's not like I know more than a handful of drummers anyway, most of which are already in bands. Uh... anyway, back to the point. I need him to get a set, and the cheaper the set, the sooner he can get it, and the sooner we can all get to starting this band. Also, this guy is hardly rollling in the money, so I'm going to have to cap the budget at around $400, and that includes some sort of double bass pedal (he really scares me how he seems to *need* a double bass.... But like I said, my style would kind of need it anyway, so what the hell) too. Now there's no way I'm gonig to tell him to buy a new set for that kind of money. You can always get better deals used, and I've told h im that whenever he gets some money he should browse MGR and just pick out something that he can afford. But here's the deal. I'm anal about being informed, and I wanna know what's good in this price range. I think $400 is even high. There are $200 kits on MGR that I probably wouldn't be able to tell a difference from a $2000 new set. And maybe he would,b ut he's hardly a seasoned veteran anyway. I just want *something*. A crappy set will suffice. But what should I look for, are there any particular deals I should tell him to go for. What about for used double bass pedals? Is it possible to get by with 2 single bass pedals, or should he just buy a double bass pedal? Remember, money is VERY tight. I say $400 cap, so nothing "$450" or "$500". And I dont want anything treading the $400 mark either, the cheaper it is the more I/we will consider it. So really, just try to keep that in mind. I know nothina bout drums, any advice would be great, I can pass on whatever to him too so... whatever. THis is long term, but I'd like to know a bit more about what we are getting into. I personally dont care about them. To be honest I dont hardly hear cymbals... ever. I dont care if it's a piece of {censored} set, just something that works. But if the cold hard truth is that nothing in that price range will work then be honest.
Members ulank
Well, look in the New Drum Kit + Head Questions thread. Looks like mikenothing scored a good chunk of what you're after for about $400 for a pretty nice setup, but deals like that can be hard to find. But, um, yah, you would most definitely need some hi-hats for the kit and could get by with one crash cymbal. The double pedal is going to cost some. The concern is, if you get a cheap double pedal, it's either going to fall apart soon or it won't be very benefical for your drummer. I have a cheap DB pedal on a crap kit at my guitarist's house and it's more hassle than anything. So, I'm sure with research you can get most of what you're after and, even if you don't care how good or bad it sounds, durability is going to be the key. Otherwise you'll be spending more money in a few months anyway. Unfortunately, cheap {censored} typically isn't all that durable.
Members DirtyBird
Any double bass pedals that go for fairly cheap used and aren't too bad? One of the best drummers I know used some sort of cobra pedals, and I've figure out those cost upwards of $300.... THere's no middle of hte line there at all? How much do pedal depreciate in value? ie - is it worth it to go for some used pedals? I think the double bass pedal is going to be the crux of the whole thing because the rest of hte set is going to be pretty cheap and crappy and I guess he'll just end up replacing/fixing things as they go. But I sorta think a nice investment in a good double bass pedal will go a long way. But who knows - I certainly dont. What's some good used sets? I'm going to check out the thread you're talking about, but if there are any sets that go for pretty cheap used that I should keep an eye out for feel free to mention them. It's just hard when you know nothing about it. I feel like I'm starting out all over again and it's not even my gear. Also, are there any things I should look out for, or make sure we get. Or at this price is it more of a take what you can get scenario?
Members mikenothing
Try looking around in newpapers and stuff. I would probably go for a Tama Rockstar, some sort of pacific, etc. Just look hard enough and do not be scared of talking people down. Finding something in that price range will be hard but if you look around and have time to look around, you will definitley find something. Good luck.-Mikenothing
